Finally, Irfanview has added support for viewing XMP metadata.  Now I have to go rewrite all my commands/scripts/hot keys to remove all the stupid things I had to do to keep IPTC and XMP in sync.

Wow.  They're really late to the XMP game.

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux/PowerShell, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).
