ExifTool doesn't yet extract GPS from the movie track of a MOV video.  It currently only extracts GPS if it exists in the metadata, but will be a static position.

Thank you.
Is there no any way to get a GPS track from .mov file?

Phil Harvey

ExifTool 10.72 (just released) has the ability to extract GPS from MOV/MP4 videos using the -ee option.  Please send me a sample if it doesn't extract it for your camera (philharvey66 at gmail.com).

Hi:  I have run Exif with the -ee and am still not seeing any GPS data.  Does that mean it doesn't exist?  I am running it against the attached file. (I tried to upload the video but it's too big apparently.) I used the following link to download the video that was originally on Facebook.

Downloaded From: https://video.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t42.9040-2/40123042_1618907684903344_1789785667643899904_n.mp4?_nc_cat=1&efg=eyJybHIiOjQzMiwicmxhIjo1MTIsInZlbmNvZGVfdGFnIjoic3ZlX3NkIn0%3D&rl=432&vabr=240&oh=b075a5cbb95b8f43dee9f9826cace8a4&oe=5B8A1B15

Any help is appreciated.

I haven't check the video in question but it's quite probably it doesn't have any significant metadata beyond properties of the file.  FB usually removes metadata from posted files due to privacy concerns.
* Did you read FAQ #3 and use the command listed there?
* Please use the Code button for exiftool code/output.

* Please include your OS, Exiftool version, and type of file you're processing (MP4, JPG, etc).

@StarGeek Ahh, yes, the Facebook stripping of data makes perfects sense. Thanks.

Hi Phill !

You alaready tested it with sony cameras like HDR-AS30 ?

Unfortunelly I was unable to get the gps info with it, using the option -ee  :(

This -ee option you have add more detailed info about it on FAQ or User Manual ?

Phil Harvey

I don't think I have an HDR-AS30 sample MP4.  Send me a small sample if you think it contains GPS that ExifTool isn't extracting (philharvey66 at gmail.com).

The -ee option is explained in the ExifTool application documentation.

Hi Phil, How Are you?

Thanks for your kindly help!

I sent you one example of video for sony camera action cam... the model I have is HDR-30V, but I think that a lot of more sony action camera will use the same gps encode format.

One thing that I already didn't dicovery why happens also.

If I get all files from SD camera card, and try to  add the track info in my videos using the Sony Action Cam Movie Creator, I receive one message (no Tracking information avaiable), BUT, IF I import the files from camera using the IMPORT button on app, I can add this info on videos.

Strange that I don't have another files either hidden on SD folders,.. maybe the import tool already process the video when I add them ?

Sorry for my bad English I'm Brazilian.

Hi Douglas,

Sorry for the delay in responding.  I'm finally starting to get caught up after my vacation.

I've taken a look at this video and can't find GPS anywhere.  Are you sure it contains GPS?

There is no metadata track in this file.  There are only video and audio tracks.  I have analyzed the video track and it does contain unknown user-defined data, but this data is not changing during the video.
