I thought it would be good to have a thread for collecting information about new lenses.
Please reply to this post with the following information if ExifTool doesn't properly identify your lens:
1) The LensType and/or LensID values extracted by ExifTool.
2) The camera make (Canon (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Canon.html#LensType), Nikon (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Nikon.html#LensID), Sony (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Sony.html#LensType), Olympus (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Olympus.html#LensType), Pentax (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Pentax.html#LensType), etc).
3) The exact lens model name as given by the lens Manufacturer.
I don't have the resources to obtain image samples for all available lenses, so the ExifTool lens identification is only possible with the help of users like you. And since I make this information public, many other applications base their lens identification on ExifTool's documented lens ID's, so not only ExifTool users will benefit from the discoveries made here.

Hi Phil, not a new lens but I think there is a small error.
Exiftool reports "AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED [II]" but I think the "II" refers to the second version of this lens that has a zoom lock.
The manual for my lens names it "AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IF-ED" (the same as on the box) whilst the manual for the new lens has "AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II"

These are the ones I reported in a separate thread. Sigma is a bit inconsistent on names for example whether they include all their designators in the name. "IF" comes and goes for example. This is my best shot.

In addition I was checking lens - TC combinations. I need to double check an apparent code duplication, but in the mean time I noticed that the Minolta 0x0105 Teleconverter tags omit the original "APO" versions, while the Sony tags includes them.
This may or may not be the reason that exiftool reports the 0x60 = Minolta AF 2x APO and 0xa0 = Minolta AF 1.4x APO as unknown. (It does correctly name the 0x90 = Minolta AF 1.4x APO II, which is the only other one I own.)

Note: the current 25791 says "Minolta/Sony AF 20mm F2.8 or Tokina Lens." This could be read to include all three versions: Minolta-new (mine, model 2641), Minolta-original (model 2579) and Sony model (SAL20F28). Since the Minota original model number is 2579, Minolta once used model numbers to start lens ids, and Minolta-Sony often retains the same lens id when updated versions are cosmetic only, this seems likely to be correct.
But these is a separate exiftool listing for "26411 = Minolta/Sony AF 20mm F2.8 New". Based on my Minolta New version this is not correct. Also there are no lenses designated Sony+New, only Minolta+New.

It sounds like you are telling me that your Minolta AF 20mm F2.8 New gives LensType number 25791? If so, I suppose that it may be possible that Minolta changed the model number partway through the production.

Are you saying that 25611.4 and 25631.2 are the same lens? Could well be. Sigma has often changed the LensType number for the same model. Otherwise, I don't understand what you are trying to tell me.

I was trying to say that I have a successor version to the Sigma 70-300 to the one listed in exiftool under the same 25611 id as this lens, and a successor version of the Sigma AF 170-500mm to the one listed in exiftool under the same 25631 id for that lens. So I was just confirming that Sigma continued to use the same ids on my non-listed versions as for the listed earlier versions.
I realize you can't list every similar version with the same id. I count 5 versions of the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 macro prior to new OS version.
I didn't even notice the separate issue that you noted:
25631.2 = Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Aspherical and
25611.4 = Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Aspherical are identical descriptions.
I can't help there, except to note again that my version of the 170-500, the Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG, read as 25631.

Note this agrees with the TC id tags listed in exiftool for these TC's.
Lens tags seem strange at first, but here is what appears to be going on:
lens id 25901 = Minolta 1.4X APO Teleconverter with 200 and 600 (and perhaps with other compatible lens in the original numbering series) id of lens not shown.
lens id 26011 = Minolta 2X APO Teleconverter with 200 and 600 (and perhaps with other compatible lens in the original numbering series) id of lens not shown.
lens id is correct with 400 lens for all three tc's (and perhaps with any lens in new number series starting over at 1 circa 1993)
lens id is correct for all three lenses with 1.4xII (and perhaps with 2xII)
Probably not useful to speculate on the (8 contact) Minolta D and Sony TC's.

Thanks. I think I understand now. You meant that the "Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro" listed as 25611.1, has the same LensType number as your newer "Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 APO DG Macro" (ie. DL vs. DG), and that the "Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Aspherical" has the same LensType as your "Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG" (ie. Aspherical vs. DG). Unfortunate.
Re your TC table. Very interesting. I'll have to think about how it is best to handle the 25901 and 26011 entries.

Edit: I have a question about the TC. For LensType 25901 or 26011, what are the values of FocalLength, MaxAperture and MaxApertureValue for one of the images?
Same LensType number, 25611, also reported by my Sigma AF 400mm F5.6 APO Macro lens.
Another entry I can add to the list is 25521 for the Tokina AT-X 17 AF 17mm F3.5.
Both numbers are for the Sony A100 camera.

For these TCs, Focal length and MaxApertureValue (both in ExifIFD) are the correct combined value. That is for the 1.4x, focal length and max aperture are 1.414 times the lens alone values, and for the 2x, focal length and max aperture are 2 times the lens alone values.

I have a theory about the different Sigma lens ID's for the same lens: They started appearing about the same time that cameras introduced adjustable fine-tune focus correction based on lens recognition. Before that, Sigma used many duplicate LensID's, and I'm guessing that they realized this would be a problem because the camera would likely apply the same focus adjustment to all lenses with the same ID. So they began changing them to make them more unique.

P.S. Which of the 3 lenses are you keeping? I have seriously considered these myself because I need a longer telephoto for my K-5. The thing that I really don't like though is that Sigma doesn't offer these in a non-OS version, so you are paying for something you don't need with all of these.

funny you ask about the lenses as I have just written a quick comparison about these 3. Unfortunately, it is in German.
And you're a Pentax user, too, which is a nice surprise.
Here's some info you might like: Being primarily a software developer, I wrote an app the other day that will check on OSX if Apple already knows the lens type. This is important so that Aperture, iPhoto and Preview even show any lens data from the img's Exif data.
If OSX has not identified the lens model, my app uses your tool to add it so that Aperture and Co then show the lens model. I plan to release that soon to the public.
Also, I found that when you use the Ey-Fi card software to geotag your imgs, it erases (overwrites?) most of the Pentax specific data, including the lens type. Reported that to them, we'll see if they'll figure it out.
On the Sigmas...
I've verified that the 150-500 does get you more detail of an object, so if you want a max tele reach, do not take the 120-400.
The 120-400 is significantly shorter and a bit lighter, though, and has a more common filter thread diameter, making it overall less cumbersome.
The Bigma (50-500) seems to be slightly less sharp around the corners than the 150-500 and then 120-400.
Overall, they all perform very similarly in quality, though, and certainly better than my cheap old Pentax M 200mm f/4.
The other slight disadvantage of the Bigma is that its lens hood has to be so wide (to accomodate 50mm at 36x24) that it can hardly be called a hood. The ones on the 3x zooms, OTOH, are long and narrow, to keep out the sun pretty well, I'd think.
On the OS...
Never having had a OS/IS lens before, I was pleasantly surprised of its usefulness. When you're holding your Pentax with a 500mm tele in your hand, the OS allows you to keep the target steadily on the screen. Imagine that target has some out of focus elements in the frame as well. If you get a lot of shaking, you'll be have more difficulty hitting the center spot for focussing - with OS this is pretty easy. In fact, even just looking at something with OS thru the viewfinder works well. So, why you might think you won't need the OS since the camera has its own, it can be of some advantages nontheless.
I will probably keep the 150-500 since I wanted the max magnification, and I plan to use it more in situations where I have the time to change lenses should I want to go into the 50-150mm area instead of going with the more universal 50-500. I choose the 150-500 over the 50-500 for the more efficient lens hood and the miminally better sharpness in corners. And it's a little less expensive as well.
Thanks for the report... I was leaning toward the 150-500 myself, so I'll probably go with that one when I take the plunge. I hadn't thought about using the OS through the viewfinder. Interesting.
Right now, I'm stuck using a Pentax DA 55-300, which isn't enough for me.

Unfortunately, that's not how it will work. If ExifTool sees a FocalLength of 280mm, it will discard the 18-270 as a possible match, and with no other good prospects it will assume that this is an unknown lens. (Unless the user has added it to the UserDefined Lenses, which overrides the focal length/aperture logic.)

Ah, you're right. This is due to the new LensSpec logic I added recently for Sony lenses. The LensSpec is correct, so the FocalLength logic is bypassed in this case. Cool. Smart program. :)

This is identified wrongly as "Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS". With 1.4x TC (Canon Mk II) LensID remains the same, but focal length and aperture are updated correctly.
"EMF adapter for Canon EOS digital cameras" (from user manual)
LensID: 27
This is a programmable (i.e. focal length and maximum aperture settable) focus confirm chip for adapting manual focus lenses to Canon cameras. Is identified as "Canon EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6", which it is probably meant to claim to be. But unlike the real thing, this chip reports LongFocal as 65535 and LensModel as "1-65535mm". Manufacturer is emfphoto.com.

I'll add the Sigma, but recognizing the EMF adapter is problematic because the focal length doesn't appear in the adapter name, and this is how ExifTool chooses amongst the possibilities. I have seen an image taken with a Nikon lens that gave a LensType of 27 too, which was obviously done using some sort of adapter.

just an idea about the Sony E-lenses "LensType", before you release the next Exiftool version:
Maybe it is not a good idea to use the same name, as the values in this 0-31 range are already used by Minolta A-mount lenses.
So I would prefer to use an alternative name,
or maybe combine as int16u with the '128' value at the next offset, to give unique values in the 30.000 range ?

Hi Jos,
I called it LensType so that it would funnel into the Composite LensID tag, which is the best tag across all make/models for determining the type of lens.
The overlap in values between these tags isn't a problem for ExifTool -- this happens with many other tags (as you well know). When writing, as long as you write by lens name, then there isn't a problem.
The int16u idea is a possibility, but I'm a bit nervous about this since I don't know what the 128 is for.

Normally overlap is not a problem, but I have a batch file to add lens information conditionally depending on the LensType:
e.g. call exiftool.exe -Exif:LensModel="24-105mm F3.5-4.5" -if "$Sony:LensType# eq 24" *.*
And now there would be two times a LensType 24:
24 => 'Minolta/Sony AF 24-105mm F3.5-4.5 (D) or Sigma or Tamron Lens',
24 => 'Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS',
If I would run this batch file on NEX images, incorrect lens information may be added...
Indeed, I don't know what the 128 means, so adding 1000 might be good solution for now.
and btw., LensSpec as input for the Composite LensID appears to provide the most accurate info for all the E lenses.

My Sigma lens "Sigma AF 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC" seem to generate different TAGs when attached to the old Konica Minolta 7D and to the new Sony A77. For the "lens TAGs" only the Lens ID on the Sony A77 is correct. Please see below exiftool output for details. I am unsure if the A77 writes wrong tags.

It looks like ExifTool is handling this lens as best it can. There probably just isn't enough information written by the 7D to allow exiftool to distinguish between the possible lenses. Unfortunately, Sigma uses the same LensType number for many of its lenses.

I just saw a RAW shot with the ultra cheap EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X lens : http://daten-transport.de/download.php?id=UtDH4GZVLN2x&dateinummer=265141
This shows up as lens type "Unknown (499)", while the lens model is correct. Same as with the new Tamron (I did a separate thread for that)

Samsung has been writing an invalid EXIF:ExposureMode for a number of models. I don't know what it is supposed to mean, but it would be problematic to add support for this because it would open the window for ExifTool to write this invalid value too.

Thanks! Sigma is really inconsistent about where the "APO" goes in the name. To be consistent with other Sigma lenses in the Canon list, I will use this name:

It is interesting that this lens already exists in the list with an ID of 183. But yours has an ID of 255. Life would be a lot easier if these companies could be more consistent.

It is LensID that you should be looking at. The LensType is ambiguous, and LensID is a Composite tag that attempts to identify the specific lens model.

Thanks. Sigma is somewhat inconsistent in its naming conventions, specifically where the "APO" goes. In a majority of lenses it seems to come after the F-number. Googling for this lens on a Pentax mount (without HSM) yields many hits with APO after the F-number, but no "IF". The "IF" version seems very rare, however the naming is the same you gave, so I'll use this.

It looks like the Fotodiox adapter behaves exactly like a Metabones smart adapter ...
This matches with some images I have seen (but without makernotes) with the Viltrox Canon EF adapter which also appeared to use the 61184 offset plus Canon-ID (from XMP-aux:LensID).
So I think comments and/or descriptions in Minolta.pm at LensType=61184 and in Sony.pm at LensType2=78 should be adapted to refer also to Fotodiox and Viltrox adapters.
NB: from a comparison of the external view of several Canon EF to Sony-E smart adapters I did some time ago, there appeared to be at least four different designs:
1) "Fotodiox Pro EF-NEX Auto" (smooth sides, matt-black E-mount)
= "VILTROX MOUNT ADAPTER EF-NEX II" (smooth sides, matt-black E-mount)

Sigma has two versions of this lens (150-600 mm: Contemporary and Sports version). I just noticed that this Sigma 150-600 Sports lens, is still reporting as a Contemporary version. But when attached to a 1.4 convertor, it will transmit the wright version.
And yes: I do use the latest version of ExifTool.
Do you mind to have another look into this?

after accidentally finding the new LensType2 number for the Touit 50mm, I searched for the other missing Zeiss lenses at 49xxx and found the other Touit lenses and also the Loxia 35mm, all having Lens Firmware Version Ver.02.
So the following can be added to the LensType2 list in Sony.pm (similar to the Loxia 50mm):

The new Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 on Canon EF registers with the ID of a Canon ef 100-400mm II lens.
The Irix 11mm F4 prototype on Canon registers as a "Canon 11mm".

I recently bought the latest (2016) version of Nikon's (Nikkor) 70-200mm zoom lens and I don't see the new lens's metadata so far in this thread, so I'll offer it to you here.
I'm guessing that you might already have obtained this new lens's metadata from some other source, in which case please disregard this post from me, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts if possible about the fact that this new len's LensType value is the same as the value extracted from my previous "VR1" / 2002 version of the lens! (See below.)
Nikon's formal name for this latest, 2016 version of the 70-200mm Zoom Nikkor is -
AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR (my emphasis)
I've seen it referred to informally as "the f/2.8E version", or "the 'FL' version".
But one key point about its name is that, although this new lens is strictly a 'G' lens because it does not have a manually-adjustable aperture ring, Nikon does not use 'G' anywhere in their human-readable descriptions of this 2016 lens.
(For future browsers of this thread ...) My limited research tells me that this new lens was "announced by Nikon in October 2016" but was shipping to at least some parts of the world from November 2016. I bought mine in UK in early February 2017.
My camera body is a D700, and this new lens's two metadata values - extracted from a recent NEF file - are as follows:

TL;DR
I'm surprised that Nikon have programmed both of these lenses with the same LensType value, therefore relying on you (ExifTool) or other software writers to probe deeper into the metadata to distinguish between them! I could see that Nikon probably had to make both lenses report themselves as "G VR" lenses, because that's strictly what they are, but - with so much of the design of this 2016 lens that is completely new and different (for example, the fact that the mechanical aperture lever is now absent from the new lens) surely (IMO) it would have been forgivable if Nikon had changed the LensType to return "VR E" instead of the same old "VR G" ?? ::)
For example, my current version of DxO Optics Pro Elite (version v11.3.1.11813) is (in the short term) totally confused and cannot tell which lens is which. It thinks my newer NEF files were taken with my old VR1 lens, so I must 'undo' DxO's automatic 'wrong lens' adjustments and make my own manual corrections. (Sorry this is off-topic from ExifTool ...) Of course this DxO confusion will be 'fixed' when DxO Labs has built and released a DxO 'module' for the newer lens. But - I think - if Nikon had installed a different LensType value into this newer lens then even DxO Optics Pro could have spotted that these NEF files were from different lenses.
My trusty IMatch database program (at IMatch version 5.8.4) is able to distinguish between the old VR1 lens and this newest version OK as I browse through my files, which is logical I suppose because IMatch makes good use of ExifTool to extract metadata from our files!
Sorry Phil if this is too much data, and it's perhaps redundant anyway!

I've read through your post and other than Nikon storing the same "LensType" information for both these lenses I don't see the problem. ExifTool can distinguish these lenses by other criteria (most notably, LensIDNumber). In fact, ExifTool doesn't use LensType at all in distinguishing Nikon lenses. I don't know why DxO has problems distinguishing these lenses.

On DxO Optics Pro (and dwelling off-topic for a moment) ... Yes, this ball is certainly in their camp and not yours. I've registered my vote on the DxO website for them to develop a DxO module for this lens, but the lens is clearly a long way down their list of priorities because it hasn't even got a 'planned date' for inclusion - yet. Probably because it's so darned expensive!

Rather, it was probably an old Sigma 50mm MACRO. I understand that LensID=25 corresponds to a lot of different Sigma lenses, so I'm not sure you can fix it, but as they were all primes < 100mm, maybe using the focal length might help?

I've been looking at some images from a Fuji Finepix S5Pro, and can't get lens data from them.
exiftool -Lens\* -LensType# *.raf
Invalid TAG name: Lens\*
I'll attach a full meta data dump of the file. The s5Pro is Nikon F-Mount and the lens in this case is:
AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED
Is this interesting? If yes there are more lenses on the S5 I can share data of or pass on raws.
It seems that some FujiFilm models don't write lens information, and the S5 pro is one of them.
Either that, or there is lens information that ExifTool isn't yet decoding, but to find this I would need a LOT of samples from a lot of different lenses. You can do this yourself by looking at the -u output and trying to find anything that correlates with the lens.

Yes. That would be more along the lines of LensInfo, and not LensID (it isn't identifying the specific lens model). However, there currently is no Composite LensInfo tag.

That is a bit in the LensType field that is currently unknown. Please let me know if you have any idea of what it could be. I have made a note that it could be related to FL lenses.

Ah I wondered, well I might be able to assist a little.
My lens doesn't have any Fluorine elements, so I don't think it would be that..
The most obvious thing I spot reading specs etc is that it has a electronic diaphragm which seems to throw an extra E into the designations..

I didn't check them all but yes of the ones in that list they all seemed to have the E somewhere in the name and mention of an electromagnetic aperture mechanism in the description.

Since I updated the firmware of my Sigma 150-600 Sports lens ("Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM | S") to version 2.0 (through the use of the Sigma USB dock), the lens is reported as "Unknown (368) 150-600mm".
No other changes were made: same lens, same camera (Canon 5D MkIII).
Any clue to this "problem"?

Hi Phil, just happened upon this thread, although i listed this recently int he bug forums
with exiftool 11.75, the "LUMIX G VARIO 35-100mm F2.8II" was listed in the composite lens id. with version 11.81+, this lens is showing as a lens id (and lens type) of "unknown (2 34 10)
note, in 11.75, there is no composite tag of "lens type"

I've been inspecting the makers notes for a Panasonic Lumix G9 using CCR-Exif code provided by Chris Rollins. CCR-Exif uses a .INI file to decode most tags from the makers notes. I have a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM in a Canon 70D body. I have recently upgraded the lens firmware via the Sigma USB mount from 1.x to the latest 2.03 version (changelog: https://www.sigma-global.com/en/download/lenses/firmware/popups/a_18_35_18/).

I noticed that on my Nikon D3500, the Kit Lens AF-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G is reported as "Unknown (A1 40 2D 53 2C 3C CB 86) ". I checked with a friend wo bought the same Nikon D3500 half a year later, and his AF-P DX 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G lens is detected properly. So maybe there are two versions of this lens?
Also I used a quite old Sigma Zoom lens (Sigma ZOOM-K 70 ~ 210mm f/4 ~ 5.6) on a Nikon D70. This combination is reported by Exiftool 12.25 as "Unknown (02 3B 5C 82 30 3C 02 00)"

Pentax has released three new HD Limited Full-frame lenses that are updates to three existing SMC Limited lenses. It looks like Pentax basically modernized them to the more recent coatings and added curved aperture blades. I have two of them the 31mm and the 77mm, and exiftool still assigns the old smc lens type and lens name.
I don 't get an "Unknown" message, just the wrong (old) lens text, and I am not expert enough at exiftool to discover how to force the numeric ID to see if there is actually any way to distinguish between the old SMC and new HD versions.
Old lens name: smc PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited
New lens name: HD PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8 Limited (note that they dropped the "AL" designation on the HD version)
Old lens name: smc PENTAX-FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited
New lens name: HD PENTAX-FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited
Old lens name: smc PENTAX-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited

I'm on a Mac and reasonably well-versed in command-line Unix, so I have managed (in my case) to just use exiftool to overwrite the type and name with the correct new lens name string for my own purposes, but I wanted to help the community and keep exiftool up to date if possible. How can I determine the raw lens encoding information for these new HD Pentax lenses and see if there is a way to distinguish them from their SMC predecessors?

I was hoping there would be a LensModel tag or something to differentiate these lenses from the smc versions. But I can't see any way to do this. I would say that Pentax (Ricoh) dropped the ball on this one.

Yeah, that's what I feared.
The lenses look like they are physically identical, even to the camera-mount contacts, so it is possible the camera body cannot tell the difference.
In practical terms like lens correction, image stabilization, etc. it probably doesn't matter, as they are optically the same design (with the exception of the improved coatings and rounded aperture blades). In my own case I can change the string to reflect the correct version since I know which version I own.

The difference should be in the electronics inside the lens. This is where the ID is stored. But unfortunately it seems they didn't see fit to change this for the updated lens.

Thanks. Unfortunately lenstype 255 is used by many different Sigma lenses. In your example, ExifTool can't distinguish between the two Sigma Lenses listed. And yours is identical to the existing 70-300, but a DG version, which is even more difficult to distinguish.

Thanks, I was trying to get exiftool to put the lensmodel the same as lensID ("-lensmodel<lensid") since lensID is correct.
(Normally I'd do lensmodel<lenstype" but that failed here, since also Sigma 255).

Yes, I think the lens type number may change with lens firmware. There are likely a large number of other lenses out there which also use the value of 255. I'll add this one for the next release.

Thanks. I'm wondering about what model name to use. Most other Tokina lenses in ExifTool have an AT-X designation. From this review (https://kenrockwell.com/tokina/100mm-f28.htm#intro) I see "MACRO 100 F2.8 D" printed on the lens, but according to Ken Rockwell Tokina calls this a "Tokina AT-X PRO 100mm F2.8 D Macro", which is the name I'll use in ExifTool unless you tell me differently. I'm hoping this is the same lens.

And yes, it does seem that Pentax is using the same lens ID for the updated 100mm macro. I'll note this in the code, but I'm not going to change the string.

This section in the example config jumped out to me

The problem is the LensID value of 61182. Canon didn't give that value to just one lens. At the moment, there are 53 known lens with that number. Exiftool can sometimes make some assumptions based on other values in the file to narrow it down, but not always.
