Title: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: Phil Harvey on January 08, 2012, 08:37:16 PM
I thought it would be good to have a thread for collecting information about new lenses.

Please reply to this post with the following information if ExifTool doesn't properly identify your lens:

1) The LensType and/or LensID values extracted by ExifTool.

2) The camera make (Canon (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Canon.html#LensType), Nikon (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Nikon.html#LensID), Sony (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Sony.html#LensType), Olympus (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Olympus.html#LensType), Pentax (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Pentax.html#LensType), etc).

3) The exact lens model name as given by the lens Manufacturer.

I don't have the resources to obtain image samples for all available lenses, so the ExifTool lens identification is only possible with the help of users like you.  And since I make this information public, many other applications base their lens identification on ExifTool's documented lens ID's, so not only ExifTool users will benefit from the discoveries made here.

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far (and there are many)!

- Phil

Hi Phil, not a new lens but I think there is a small error.

Exiftool reports "AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED [II]" but I think the "II" refers to the second version of this lens that has a zoom lock.

The manual for my lens names it "AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IF-ED" (the same as on the box) whilst the manual for the new lens has "AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II"

More info from exiftool from my lens:

Lens Type                       : G VR

Hi Alan,

Thanks, but unfortunately both versions of this lens have the same ID.  In my notation, this is indicated by putting the "II" in square brackets, but I admit that this isn't obvious.

These are the ones I reported in a separate thread.  Sigma is a bit inconsistent on names for example whether they include all their designators in the name.  "IF" comes and goes for example.  This is my best shot.

In addition I was checking lens - TC combinations.  I need to double check an apparent code duplication, but in the mean time I noticed that the Minolta 0x0105    Teleconverter tags omit the original "APO" versions, while the Sony tags includes them.

This may or may not be the reason that exiftool reports the 0x60 = Minolta AF 2x APO and 0xa0 = Minolta AF 1.4x APO as unknown.  (It does correctly name the 0x90 = Minolta AF 1.4x APO II, which is the only other one I own.)

Excellent, thanks.  I'll fix the Teleconverter tags to use the same lookup.

lens id     Camera        lens name

25791   Sony and Minolta  Minolta 20mm F2.8 new

Note: the current 25791 says "Minolta/Sony AF 20mm F2.8 or Tokina Lens." This could be read to include all three versions:  Minolta-new (mine, model 2641), Minolta-original (model 2579) and Sony model (SAL20F28).  Since the Minota original model number is 2579, Minolta once used model numbers to start lens ids, and Minolta-Sony often retains the same lens id when updated versions are cosmetic only, this seems likely to be correct.

But these is a separate exiftool listing for "26411 = Minolta/Sony AF 20mm F2.8 New".  Based on my Minolta New version this is not correct.  Also there are no lenses designated Sony+New, only Minolta+New.

25   Sony and Minolta     Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC
Note: current listing:  25.4 = Sigma 30mm F1.4 DG EX is incorrect.  There is no DG version of this lens.  Probably just a typo.

Thanks for your comments.

QuoteBut these is a separate exiftool listing for "26411 = Minolta/Sony AF 20mm F2.8 New".  Based on my Minolta New version this is not correct.

It sounds like you are telling me that your Minolta AF 20mm F2.8 New gives LensType number 25791?  If so, I suppose that it may be possible that Minolta changed the model number partway through the production.

QuoteAlso there are no lenses designated Sony+New, only Minolta+New.

Right.  But how to indicate this in a convenient way?

QuoteNote: current listing:  25.4 = Sigma 30mm F1.4 DG EX is incorrect.  There is no DG version of this lens.  Probably just a typo.

I'll check my reference on this tomorrow.

Are you saying that 25611.4 and 25631.2 are the same lens?  Could well be.  Sigma has often changed the LensType number for the same model.  Otherwise, I don't understand what you are trying to tell me.

yes mine is definitely New version with id 25791

I mentioned this only to indicate that there was an additional inconsistency with the listing.   But an alternative would be "26411 = Minolta New/Sony AF 20mm F2.8.

I was trying to say that I have a successor version to the Sigma 70-300 to the one listed in exiftool under the same 25611 id as this lens, and a successor version of the Sigma AF 170-500mm to the one listed in exiftool under the same 25631 id for that lens.  So I was just confirming that Sigma continued to use the same ids on my non-listed versions as for the listed earlier versions.

I realize you can't list every similar version with the same id.  I count 5 versions of the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 macro prior to new OS version.

I didn't even notice the separate issue that you noted:

25631.2   = Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Aspherical and
25611.4   = Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Aspherical are identical descriptions.

I can't help there, except to note again that my version of the 170-500,  the Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG, read as 25631.

Minolta lens and teleconverter combinations

On Sony and Minolta cameras

To limit width in the following table,
600 means Minolta 600mm f4 HS APO G
400 means Minolta 400mm f4.5 HS APO G
200 means Minolta 200mm f2.8 HS APO G
1.4X means Minolta 1.4X APO Teleconverter
1.4X II means Minolta 1.4X APO Teleconverter II
2X means Minolta 2X APO Teleconverter
TC means teleconverter.

                 lens id    TC id
lens       TC     0xb027    0x0105
600       none    26091       0
600       1.4x    25901      160
600      1.4xII   26091      144
600        2x     26011       96

400       none      15        0
400       1.4x      15       160
400      1.4xII     15       144
400        2x       15        96

200       none    26121       0
200       1.4x    25901      160
200      1.4xII   26121      144
200        2x     26011       96

Note this agrees with the TC id tags listed in exiftool for these TC's.

Lens tags seem strange at first, but here is what appears to be going on:

lens id 25901 = Minolta 1.4X APO Teleconverter with 200 and 600 (and perhaps with other compatible lens in the original numbering series)   id of lens not shown.

lens id 26011 =  Minolta 2X APO Teleconverter with 200 and 600 (and perhaps with other compatible lens in the original numbering series)     id of lens not shown.

lens id is correct with 400 lens for all three tc's (and perhaps with any lens in new number series starting over at 1 circa 1993)

lens id is correct for all three lenses with 1.4xII  (and perhaps with 2xII)

Probably not useful to speculate on the (8 contact) Minolta D and Sony TC's.

Thanks.  I think I understand now.  You meant that the "Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro" listed as 25611.1, has the same LensType number as your newer "Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 APO DG Macro" (ie. DL vs. DG), and that the "Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Aspherical" has the same LensType as your "Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG" (ie. Aspherical vs. DG).  Unfortunate.

Re your TC table.  Very interesting.  I'll have to think about how it is best to handle the 25901 and 26011 entries.

- Phil

Edit: I have a question about the TC.  For LensType 25901 or 26011, what are the values of FocalLength, MaxAperture and MaxApertureValue for one of the images?

Same LensType number, 25611, also reported by my Sigma AF 400mm F5.6 APO Macro lens.
Another entry I can add to the list is 25521 for the Tokina AT-X 17 AF 17mm F3.5.
Both numbers are for the Sony A100 camera.

For these TCs,  Focal length and MaxApertureValue (both in ExifIFD) are the correct  combined value.  That is for the 1.4x, focal length and max aperture are 1.414 times the lens alone values, and  for the 2x, focal length and max aperture are 2 times the lens alone values.

I don't see a field named MaxAperture

I just have a few lens for testing here...

All on a Pentax K-5

1.
Sigma 50-500 4.5-6.3 APO DG OS, ID 8 17 (exiftool 8.80 knows this one already)

2.
Sigma 150-500 5-6.3 APO DG OS, ID 8 15

3.
Sigma 120-400 4.5-5.6 APO DG OS, ID 8 13

The naming of these lenses is from what's printed on the Sigma boxes, BTW.
The "HSM" is also on my Sigma boxes, but only as a separate label, not part of the name label for the lens. The "HSM" is part of the name on the lens itself, though, like this:
  Sigma DG
  120-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 APO HSM

I just found that there's already a record of one of the above lenses:
'8 255.2'   = Sigma APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM
It's certainly this one, I believe: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/150-500mm-f5-63-apo-dg-os-hsm-sigma
Now, why would we find two separate IDs for this lens?
Mine were all from Europe (UK and Germany), and all recently purchased (just this week, I'll return two of them soon).

Now, if only there was a way to patch Apple's own detection to get these Lens know, because its tools (e.g. Preview) fail to recognize any of them...
Title: Re: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: Phil Harvey on February 26, 2012, 03:03:23 PM
Excellent!  Thanks.  I'll add these.

I have a theory about the different Sigma lens ID's for the same lens:  They started appearing about the same time that cameras introduced adjustable fine-tune focus correction based on lens recognition.  Before that, Sigma used many duplicate LensID's, and I'm guessing that they realized this would be a problem because the camera would likely apply the same focus adjustment to all lenses with the same ID.  So they began changing them to make them more unique.

- Phil

P.S.  Which of the 3 lenses are you keeping?  I have seriously considered these myself because I need a longer telephoto for my K-5.  The thing that I really don't like though is that Sigma doesn't offer these in a non-OS version, so you are paying for something you don't need with all of these.
Title: Re: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: tempel on February 27, 2012, 11:24:42 AM
Phil,
funny you ask about the lenses as I have just written a quick comparison about these 3. Unfortunately, it is in German.

And you're a Pentax user, too, which is a nice surprise.

Here's some info you might like: Being primarily a software developer, I wrote an app the other day that will check on OSX if Apple already knows the lens type. This is important so that Aperture, iPhoto and Preview even show any lens data from the img's Exif data.
If OSX has not identified the lens model, my app uses your tool to add it so that Aperture and Co then show the lens model. I plan to release that soon to the public.

Also, I found that when you use the Ey-Fi card software to geotag your imgs, it erases (overwrites?) most of the Pentax specific data, including the lens type. Reported that to them, we'll see if they'll figure it out.

On the Sigmas...

I've verified that the 150-500 does get you more detail of an object, so if you want a max tele reach, do not take the 120-400.
The 120-400 is significantly shorter and a bit lighter, though, and has a more common filter thread diameter, making it overall less cumbersome.
The Bigma (50-500) seems to be slightly less sharp around the corners than the 150-500 and then 120-400.
Overall, they all perform very similarly in quality, though, and certainly better than my cheap old Pentax M 200mm f/4.
The other slight disadvantage of the Bigma is that its lens hood has to be so wide (to accomodate 50mm at 36x24) that it can hardly be called a hood. The ones on the 3x zooms, OTOH, are long and narrow, to keep out the sun pretty well, I'd think.

On the OS...

Never having had a OS/IS lens before, I was pleasantly surprised of its usefulness. When you're holding your Pentax with a 500mm tele in your hand, the OS allows you to keep the target steadily on the screen. Imagine that target has some out of focus elements in the frame as well. If you get a lot of shaking, you'll be have more difficulty hitting the center spot for focussing - with OS this is pretty easy. In fact, even just looking at something with OS thru the viewfinder works well. So, why you might think you won't need the OS since the camera has its own, it can be of some advantages nontheless.

I will probably keep the 150-500 since I wanted the max magnification, and I plan to use it more in situations where I have the time to change lenses should I want to go into the 50-150mm area instead of going with the more universal 50-500. I choose the 150-500 over the 50-500 for the more efficient lens hood and the miminally better sharpness in corners. And it's a little less expensive as well.

Thanks for the report... I was leaning toward the 150-500 myself, so I'll probably go with that one when I take the plunge.  I hadn't thought about using the OS through the viewfinder.  Interesting.

Right now, I'm stuck using a Pentax DA 55-300, which isn't enough for me.

1) 128

2) Sony (reported on A77)

3) Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM

This lens is not new so I was surprised that it is not listed in Sony lens tags already.
This will the 13th lens with tag 128, all Sigma and Tamron.

Note that unlike some Sigma "DC" lenses, this lens does report 01 for the first byte of lensspec indicating an ASPC only lens.   Thus the "DT" in lensspec print conversion rather than Tamron equivalent "Di II"

This lens does cause the A900 to automatically switch to aspc-size mode.  Just as with Sony DT lenses, the camera reports camera model id 262 / DSLR-A900 (APS-C mode).

Added:

Also note that at max zoom out the lens reports 280 for the focal length rather than 270.

At least at the moment the other two lenstype 57 lenses are primes with max apertures faster than the aperture range of the 18-270, which leaves only one  zoom to select from.

Unfortunately, that's not how it will work.  If ExifTool sees a FocalLength of 280mm, it will discard the 18-270 as a possible match, and with no other good prospects it will assume that this is an unknown lens.  (Unless the user has added it to the UserDefined Lenses, which overrides the focal length/aperture logic.)

Ah, you're right.  This is due to the new LensSpec logic I added recently for Sony lenses.  The LensSpec is correct, so the FocalLength logic is bypassed in this case.  Cool.  Smart program. :)

For Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM with a 1.4x Mk II extender, LensType reports Unknown (252) but LensModel spots it and reports 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM +1.4x

The following are tested with Canon 40D and ExifTool 8.88.

"Sigma 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro" (from Sigma US website)
LensID: 183
This is identified wrongly as "Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS". With 1.4x TC (Canon Mk II) LensID remains the same, but focal length and aperture are updated correctly.

"EMF adapter for Canon EOS digital cameras" (from user manual)
LensID: 27
This is a programmable (i.e. focal length and maximum aperture settable) focus confirm chip for adapting manual focus lenses to Canon cameras. Is identified as "Canon EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6", which it is probably meant to claim to be. But unlike the real thing, this chip reports LongFocal as 65535 and LensModel as "1-65535mm". Manufacturer is emfphoto.com.

Post by: Phil Harvey on April 18, 2012, 02:29:43 PM
Thanks!

I'll add the Sigma, but recognizing the EMF adapter is problematic because the focal length doesn't appear in the adapter name, and this is how ExifTool chooses amongst the possibilities.  I have seen an image taken with a Nikon lens that gave a LensType of 27 too, which was obviously done using some sort of adapter.

Hi,

Just received a shiny new Nikon lens, which doesn't seem to be in the list yet; here's the Lens-related output from yesterday's test pics:

Lens Type                       : G
Lens                            : 28mm f/1.8
Lens Data Version               : 0204

Thanks!  I've been looking for a 645 90mm sample for a while now...

Just one thing: I think your file was corrupted because the first number should be 13 (and the 2nd I'm guessing should maybe be 20).

Where did you find the sample?

- Phil

Edit: I haven't added this LensType because I think the value is incorrect.  Please check again with a sample straight out of the camera.

Edit: 2 months later and I have finally found a sample.  The LensType is "13 20" as I suspected.

Hi Phil,
just an idea about the Sony E-lenses "LensType", before you release the next Exiftool version:
Maybe it is not a good idea to use the same name, as the values in this 0-31 range are already used by Minolta A-mount lenses.
So I would prefer to use an alternative name,
or maybe combine as int16u with the '128' value at the next offset, to give unique values in the 30.000 range ?
Regards,
Jos
Title: Re: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: Phil Harvey on April 19, 2013, 01:37:14 PM
Hi Jos,

I called it LensType so that it would funnel into the Composite LensID tag, which is the best tag across all make/models for determining the type of lens.

The overlap in values between these tags isn't a problem for ExifTool -- this happens with many other tags (as you well know).  When writing, as long as you write by lens name, then there isn't a problem.

The int16u idea is a possibility, but I'm a bit nervous about this since I don't know what the 128 is for.

- Phil

Edit:  What about arbitrarily adding 1000 to the values?  There shouldn't be any overlap with values of the other LensType tag if we do this.
Title: Re: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: JosR on April 19, 2013, 05:07:57 PM
Hi Phil,
Normally overlap is not a problem, but I have a batch file to add lens information conditionally depending on the LensType:
e.g. call exiftool.exe -Exif:LensModel="24-105mm F3.5-4.5" -if "$Sony:LensType# eq 24" *.*
And now there would be two times a LensType 24:
    24 => 'Minolta/Sony AF 24-105mm F3.5-4.5 (D) or Sigma or Tamron Lens',
    24 => 'Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS',
If I would run this batch file on NEX images, incorrect lens information may be added...

Indeed, I don't know what the 128 means, so adding 1000 might be good solution for now.

and btw., LensSpec as input for the Composite LensID appears to provide the most accurate info for all the E lenses.

Jos

My Sigma lens "Sigma AF 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC" seem to generate different TAGs when attached to the old Konica Minolta 7D and to the new Sony A77. For the "lens TAGs" only the Lens ID on the Sony A77 is correct. Please see below exiftool output for details. I am unsure if the A77 writes wrong tags.

Hi Ralph,

It looks like ExifTool is handling this lens as best it can.  There probably just isn't enough information written by the 7D to allow exiftool to distinguish between the possible lenses.  Unfortunately, Sigma uses the same LensType number for many of its lenses.

Great, thanks.

This lens different from the existing "Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 EX DG" recognized by ExifTool, or is it the same lens just with a new ID (which would be typical)?

No clue actually, I only have this old clunker...
No idea if there where several variants of the EX DG made.

sorry

B&H lists the lens in the name without the D but the image has the D.

The only thing I found is this:

No mention of a D variant.

According to the manual it is just a plain 'Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC'. So neither 'macro' nor 'HSM' or 'OS'. It is was bought in 2011. Maybe the first version of this lens type?

Hi, I bought two Voigtlander lenses:

90mm F3.5 APO-Lanthar SL II

Lens ID                         : Unknown (33) 90mm

and

20 mm / F3,5 Color Skopar SL II
http://www.voigtlander.com/cms/voigtlaender/voigtlaender_cms.nsf/id/pa_fdih7pyj95.html
Lens ID                         : Unknown (33) 20mm

Both give
Lens Type                       : Voigtlander or Carl Zeiss Lens

The camera is a Canon 6D.

I plan to buy their 40mm too.
Title: Re: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: Phil Harvey on April 05, 2014, 01:00:34 PM
Thanks!  These will appear in ExifTool 9.57.  These lenses are already recognized for Nikon:

Voigtlander Color Skopar 20mm F3.5 SLII Aspherical
Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 90mm F3.5 SLII Close Focus

I will use these same names (except that by convention Canon uses "f/" instead of "F") unless I hear otherwise from you.

The Ultron 40mm is already in the list, so it should be identified properly.

Hi,

the new Sigma 50 1.4 Art on Canon EF is reported by exiftool as Canon 35 1.4 L.

Is there any way for exiftool to check the focal length and the depending on it report the right lens name?

Thanks!  It will be called "Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM | A", and the LensID tag should be able to distinguish this from the Canon lens.

Unfortunately, I don't think that the 2nd lens (35mm) can be differentiated from the non-Art version, so I don't think there is anything I can do about this.

The Samsung NX lens 16-50/2-2.8 reports back as Unknown (13)

Here is a raw from the NX1 with that lens: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/samsung-nx1/YSAM_0665.SRW.HTM

There also is an Unknown (3) Exposure mode in there.

Thanks!  I'll add this lens.

Samsung has been writing an invalid EXIF:ExposureMode for a number of models.  I don't know what it is supposed to mean, but it would be problematic to add support for this because it would open the window for ExifTool to write this invalid value too.

From the first Sony ILCE-7M2 samples I found (Software : ILCE-7M2 v1.00), the following changes to Sony.pm would appear to largely cover this model:
- SonyModelID = 340
- should be added to the Condition for Tag2010g
- Tag9405 starts with x9a which can be added to the Condition for Tag9405b

One more thing regarding the Sigma APO 50-150mm - when I've edited a JPEG shot using that lens in Photoshop and saved it, the lens is identified as an AF-S VR Nikkor 600mm f/4G ED:

Field Of View                   : 20.6 deg
Focal Length                    : 66.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 99.0 mm)
Lens ID                         : AF-S VR Nikkor 600mm f/4G ED
Scale Factor To 35 mm Equivalent: 1.5
Camera Model Name               : NIKON D3200
Make                            : NIKON CORPORATION
Lens                            : 50.0-150.0 mm f/2.8
Lens ID                         : 152
Lens Info                       : 50-150mm f/2.8

Don't know if that information is relevant. The sequence of hex numbers that ExifTool found in the original file Lens ID: Unknown (98 48 50 76 24 24 4B 0E) is nowhere to be found in this new file saved by Photoshop.

Thanks.  ExifTool may still mis-identify the lens in images mangled by Photoshop, but 9.79 will get the lens correct for original images.

Thanks!  Is the the B001 model?  If so, I wonder why the LensID changed since ExifTool already recognizes this lens with a slightly different LensID.

I have the Sigma AF 180 f 4.0 Makro which is shown as "Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM | A" on my Canon. But where can I find the ID-Number?

Thanks.  That's enough information.  It is ID 255.  (You could get this by extracting -lenstype#.)

This will appear in ExifTool 9.85 as "Sigma AF 180mm f/4.0 Macro".

Sorry, Phil, I made a mistake. The correct name should be: "SIGMA APO Makro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM " or "MAKRO 180mm F2,8 EX DG OS HSM"

Thanks!  Sigma is really inconsistent about where the "APO" goes in the name.  To be consistent with other Sigma lenses in the Canon list, I will use this name:

Sigma 180mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro

It is interesting that this lens already exists in the list with an ID of 183.  But yours has an ID of 255.  Life would be a lot easier if these companies could be more consistent.

Hi Phil, I send you a link, because the RAW-File is to big.

It seems, that Capture One Pro 8 doesn't write the Info of the Lens in the metadata? I send also a jpg, exported from Capture One.

I got your sample.  ExifTool 9.85 works as expected for me:

> exiftool ~/Desktop/2015-02-12\ -\ XR2A7561.CR2 -exiftoolversion -'*lens*'
ExifTool Version Number         : 9.85
Lens Type                       : Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM | A or Other Sigma Lens
Lens Info                       : 180mm f/0
Lens Model                      : 180mm
Lens Serial Number              : 0000000000
Lens                            : 180.0 mm
Lens ID                         : Sigma 180mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro
Lens                            : 180.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 174.7 mm)

It is LensID that you should be looking at.  The LensType is ambiguous, and LensID is a Composite tag that attempts to identify the specific lens model.

"Sigma 300mm F2.8 EX DG APO IF" (the one with screwdrive, no HSM)
for Pentax
shows as "Unknown (3 42)".

I am not really sure about the naming conventions for this glass.
Title: Re: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: Phil Harvey on July 17, 2015, 01:10:48 PM
Thanks.  Sigma is somewhat inconsistent in its naming conventions, specifically where the "APO" goes.  In a majority of lenses it seems to come after the F-number.  Googling for this lens on a Pentax mount (without HSM) yields many hits with APO after the F-number, but no "IF".  The "IF" version seems very rare, however the naming is the same you gave, so I'll use this.

Hi Mees,

Thanks.  It's odd that the lens produces such different ID's when used with a converter.  This requires some new logic to be added to ExifTool.  Version 10.03 will contain this update, and should be released sometime this week.

Hi Phil,

I tried to email some of this to you, but got the mails back with "(Unable to deliver message within specified time.)", therefore I post it here:

=========================
Exiftool 10.05
new lenses:
in Canon.pm: LensType 180.5 should maybe have "ZE" as it is the Canon version ?
in Sony.pm: LensType2 49234 should have 'F2.8' like the other Sony/Batis/Loxia lenses (not f/2.8 which is Canon notation)

=========================
Minor typo in sony.pm:
            '3 3 2 0' => 'ARW 2.3.2', #JR (RX1RM2,ICLE-7SM2 - support for uncompressed 14-bit RAW)
'ICLE' should be 'ILCE'
(and maybe also add 'DSC-' to the RX1RM2)

=========================
Ken Rockwell has a comparison between the Canon 16-35mm f/4 lens on a Canon 5DS R and on the Sony 7RM2 with a Fotodiox adapter.
The Sony image gives:
[ExifIFD]       0xa432 Lens Info                       : 16-35mm f/4
[ExifIFD]       0xa434 Lens Model                      : 16-35mm F4 OSS
[Sony]          0xb027 Lens Type                       : Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM + Metabones Adapter
[Sony]          0xb02a Lens Spec                       : 16-35mm F4 OSS
[Sony]          0x0008 Lens Mount 2                    : A-mount (5)
[Sony]          0x0009 Lens Type 3                     : Metabones Canon EF Smart Adapter Mark III or IV
[Sony]          0x000b Camera E-mount Version          : 1.50
[Sony]          0x000d Lens E-mount Version            : 1.08
[Sony]          0x0015 Lens Firmware Version           : Ver.31
(LensType=61691)
(LensType3=78)

It looks like the Fotodiox adapter behaves exactly like a Metabones smart adapter ...
This matches with some images I have seen (but without makernotes) with the Viltrox Canon EF adapter which also appeared to use the 61184 offset plus Canon-ID (from XMP-aux:LensID).

So I think comments and/or descriptions in Minolta.pm at LensType=61184 and in Sony.pm at LensType2=78 should be adapted to refer also to Fotodiox and Viltrox adapters.

NB: from a comparison of the external view of several Canon EF to Sony-E smart adapters I did some time ago, there appeared to be at least four different designs:

1) "Fotodiox Pro EF-NEX Auto" (smooth sides, matt-black E-mount)
= "VILTROX MOUNT ADAPTER EF-NEX II" (smooth sides, matt-black E-mount)
= "CAMERAPLUS MOUNT ADAPTER AT-EF-NEX II" (smooth sides, matt-black E-mount)
= "Commlite AUTO MOUNT ADAPTER EF-NEX" (smooth sides, silver/metal E-mount)

2) "Commlite Auto Focus Adapter EF-NEX" ('ribbed' sides)
= "Koolertron Auto Focus Adapter EF-NEX"
= Neewer "YouPro Auto Focus Adapter EF-NEX"

3) Metabones - own design

4) Fotga - appears to be a different design

Jos

Hi Jos,

Thanks!  I've updated mostly the comments in the code as you have suggested, and have also changed these lens descriptions:

61184 => 'Metabones Canon EF Adapter or Other Adapter', #JR (also Fotodiox or Viltrox)
78 => 'Metabones Canon EF Smart Adapter Mark III or Other Adapter', #PH/JR (also Mark IV, Fotodiox and Viltrox)

Hi Daniel,

Unfortunately ExifTool doesn't yet decode the WB850F maker notes.  And even if it did, the lens information is likely not stored there because this is a fixed-lens camera.

You might want to have a look at http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/k-1/ex/img/ex-pic05_on.jpg

There are new values for AF Point selected and AF points in focus.

The HD PENTAX-D FA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR  Kit lens has Lens Type 8/61 .

The K-1 has Pentax Model ID 0x13092.

The K-1 Raw development process is "16"

The sample for the HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm F2.8 ED SDM WR is here: http://www.dpreview.com/sample-galleries/9969263190/pentax-k-1-pre-production-sample-gallery/1317951869

Hi Phil,

Sigma has two versions of this lens (150-600 mm: Contemporary and Sports version). I just noticed that this Sigma 150-600 Sports lens, is still reporting as a Contemporary version. But when attached to a 1.4 convertor, it will transmit the wright version.

And yes: I do use the latest version of ExifTool.

Do you mind to have another look into this?

Best regards,

Mees

Hi Mees,

Thanks.  It's odd that the lens produces such different ID's when used with a converter.  This requires some new logic to be added to ExifTool.  Version 10.03 will contain this update, and should be released sometime this week.

Hi Phil,
after accidentally finding the new LensType2 number for the Touit 50mm, I searched for the other missing Zeiss lenses at 49xxx and found the other Touit lenses and also the Loxia 35mm, all having Lens Firmware Version Ver.02.
So the following can be added to the LensType2 list in Sony.pm (similar to the Loxia 50mm):

    49201 => 'Zeiss Touit 12mm F2.8', #JR (lens firmware Ver.02)
    49202 => 'Zeiss Touit 32mm F1.8', #JR (lens firmware Ver.02)
    49203 => 'Zeiss Touit 50mm F2.8 Macro', #JR (lens firmware Ver.02)

    49233 => 'Zeiss Loxia 35mm F2', #JR (lens firmware Ver.02)

"Unknown (4 10)" on Pentax K represents the Irix 15mm F2.4 lens (tested a Blackstone version).

The new Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 on Canon EF registers with the ID of a Canon ef 100-400mm II lens.

The Irix 11mm F4 prototype on Canon registers as a "Canon 11mm".

This is likely the EXIF:LensModel value, which is a string.  I don't know why some software would write this.  I don't think it is like this straight out of the iPhone.

EXIF:Make = SONY
EXIF:Model = ILCE-7RM2
EXIF:Lens Model = SAMYANG AF 14mm F2.8
SONY:LensType   = 65535
SONY:LensType2 = 51505*

* on the exiftool website there is the value 32790.1. This seems a fault.

Their model code is IO14AF-E.

Hello Phil,

I recently bought the latest (2016) version of Nikon's (Nikkor) 70-200mm zoom lens and I don't see the new lens's metadata so far in this thread, so I'll offer it to you here.

I'm guessing that you might already have obtained this new lens's metadata from some other source, in which case please disregard this post from me, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts if possible about the fact that this new len's LensType value is the same as the value extracted from my previous "VR1" / 2002 version of the lens! (See below.)

Nikon's formal name for this latest, 2016 version of the 70-200mm Zoom Nikkor is -
AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR       (my emphasis)

I've seen it referred to informally as "the f/2.8E version", or "the 'FL' version".

But one key point about its name is that, although this new lens is strictly a 'G' lens because it does not have a manually-adjustable aperture ring, Nikon does not use 'G' anywhere in their human-readable descriptions of this 2016 lens.

(For future browsers of this thread ...) My limited research tells me that this new lens was "announced by Nikon in October 2016" but was shipping to at least some parts of the world from November 2016.  I bought mine in UK in early February 2017.

My camera body is a D700, and this new lens's two metadata values - extracted from a recent NEF file - are as follows:

exiftool -lenstype -m  _C7P7951.NEF
returns ...
Lens Type                       : G VR

exiftool -lenstype# -m _C7P7951.NEF
returns ...
Lens Type                       : 14

exiftool -lensID -m  _C7P7951.NEF
returns ...
Lens ID                         : AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR

exiftool -lensID# -m _C7P7951.NEF
returns ...
Lens ID                         : A4 48 5C 80 24 24 CF 0E

and ... to add a bit more info ...

From this latest lens, the command
exiftool -lens* -m  _C7P7951.NEF
returns ...
Lens Type                       : G VR
Lens                            : 70-200mm f/2.8
Lens Data Version               : 0203
Lens ID Number                  : 164
Lens F Stops                    : 6.00
Lens ID                         : AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR
Lens Spec                       : 70-200mm f/2.8 G VR

(I figure that the last two tags are composite tags because they're omitted if I include the '-e' switch in that command.)

I never owned the "VR2" / 2009 version of this lens.

For comparison with the above, and to illustrate the LensType 'ambiguity' that I mentioned earlier, here are the same tags extracted from my older "VR1" / 2002 version of this lens.  They're from an earlier NEF file of course, taken on the same D700 body.

You will already know Nikon's formal name for the old "VR1" / 2002 lens as -
70-200mm f2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor

exiftool -lenstype -m  _C7P7917.NEF
returns ...
Lens Type                       : G VR

exiftool -lenstype# -m _C7P7917.NEF
returns ...
Lens Type                       : 14

exiftool -lensID -m  _C7P7917.NEF
returns ...
Lens ID                         : AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED

exiftool -lensID# -m _C7P7917.NEF
returns ...
Lens ID                         : 77 48 5C 80 24 24 7B 0E

and again to add a bit more info ...

On that older lens, the command
exiftool -lens* -m  _C7P7917.NEF
returns:
Lens Type                       : G VR
Lens                            : 70-200mm f/2.8
Lens Data Version               : 0203
Lens ID Number                  : 119
Lens F Stops                    : 6.00
Lens ID                         : AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED
Lens Spec                       : 70-200mm f/2.8 G VR

TL;DR

I'm surprised that Nikon have programmed both of these lenses with the same LensType value, therefore relying on you (ExifTool) or other software writers to probe deeper into the metadata to distinguish between them!  I could see that Nikon probably had to make both lenses report themselves as "G VR" lenses, because that's strictly what they are, but - with so much of the design of this 2016 lens that is completely new and different (for example, the fact that the mechanical aperture lever is now absent from the new lens) surely (IMO) it would have been forgivable if Nikon had changed the LensType to return "VR E" instead of the same old "VR G" ??  ::)

For example, my current version of DxO Optics Pro Elite (version v11.3.1.11813) is (in the short term) totally confused and cannot tell which lens is which. It thinks my newer NEF files were taken with my old VR1 lens, so I must 'undo' DxO's automatic 'wrong lens' adjustments and make my own manual corrections. (Sorry this is off-topic from ExifTool ...) Of course this DxO confusion will be 'fixed' when DxO Labs has built and released a DxO 'module' for the newer lens. But - I think - if Nikon had installed a different LensType value into this newer lens then even DxO Optics Pro could have spotted that these NEF files were from different lenses.

My trusty IMatch database program (at IMatch version 5.8.4) is able to distinguish between the old VR1 lens and this newest version OK as I browse through my files, which is logical I suppose because IMatch makes good use of ExifTool to extract metadata from our files!

Sorry Phil if this is too much data, and it's perhaps redundant anyway!

Thank you for giving us this wonderous ExifTool utility. We'd all be in a very strange place without it!!

Hi Colin,

Hi Colin,

I've read through your post and other than Nikon storing the same "LensType" information for both these lenses I don't see the problem.  ExifTool can distinguish these lenses by other criteria (most notably, LensIDNumber).  In fact, ExifTool doesn't use LensType at all in distinguishing Nikon lenses.  I don't know why DxO has problems distinguishing these lenses.

Hi Phil,

Thankyou for confirming this.

(I just wanted to be sure that - because this lens is relatively new - there were no 'updates pending' between yourself and Nikon regarding this lens's metadata.)

On DxO Optics Pro (and dwelling off-topic for a moment) ... Yes, this ball is certainly in their camp and not yours.  I've registered my vote on the DxO website for them to develop a DxO module for this lens, but the lens is clearly a long way down their list of priorities because it hasn't even got a 'planned date' for inclusion - yet.  Probably because it's so darned expensive!

Hello,

I'm a photographer with a large collection of lenses; I was trying to remember which one I used to take a picture, and I came across this:

however the lens is obviously wrong (I don't own a 100-300).
Rather, it was probably an old Sigma 50mm MACRO. I understand that LensID=25 corresponds to a lot of different Sigma lenses, so I'm not sure you can fix it, but as they were all primes < 100mm, maybe using the focal length might help?

thanks, MH

Could you send me a sample image from your Sigma 50mm Macro lens?  My email is philharvey66 at gmail.com

Also, what is the exact model name for this lens?

Thanks

Hi,

I have a couple of lens that aren't registering correctly. I use a Canon EOS 550D and these are

"Sigma 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HS" shows as:

Lens Info                       : 18 300 undef undef
Lens                            : Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Lens ID                         : 197

"Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD 1:2 Macro" as:

Lens Type                       : 28
Lens                            : 70
Lens ID                         : 28

Is there anything I can do to improve the detection as the correct lens?

Regards,

Steve.

Hi Steve,

I will add support for the Sigma, thanks.

The Tamron should already be properly identified in original camera images.  If not, please send me an original image shot with this lens (philharvey66 at gmail.com).

Unfortunately that Canon lens has multiple LensType values so I need more information.

What is the output of this command for one of these images?

exiftool -lenstype -n FILE

Thanks

Hi, Phil,

first: Thx for the great ExifTool and also to Bogdan for ExifToolGUI, which i both use for about 6 years.

I've found informations on the following lens (used with Nikon D750): Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 DG OS HSM Art
Lens ID                         : Unknown (C9 48 37 5C 24 24 4B 4E)
Lens Spec                     : 24-70mm f/2.8 G VR [6]

Hi Phil,

I have the Canon version of a Sigma 20mm/1.4 Art (it's updated to the latest firmware). I'm using it on a Canon 5Dmk3 here and the lens info ExifTool displays seems to be a bit off..

With ExifTool 10.40:

$ exiftool -Lens\* -LensType# TZ2_JST_20180724_194421_5d3_ed2b9119.jpg
Lens Type                       : Unknown (368)
Lens Info                       : 20mm f/0
Lens Model                      : 20mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art 015
Lens Serial Number              : 0000000000
Lens                            : 20.0 mm
Lens ID                         : Canon 20mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art 015
Lens                            : 20.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 19.4 mm)
Lens Type                       : 368

Here at least it shows as a 20mm/1.4 lens. Please note that the LensType is 368 here.

With ExifTool 11.06 it got worse:

$ exiftool -Lens\* TZ2_JST_20180724_194421_5d3_ed2b9119.jpg
Lens Type                       : Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM | A
Lens Info                       : 20mm f/0
Lens Model                      : 20mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art 015
Lens Serial Number              : 0000000000
Lens                            : 20.0 mm
Lens ID                         : Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM | A + 1.4x
Lens                            : 20.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 19.4 mm)

Now it's recognized as a Sigma, but it became a Sigma 14-24/2.8 Art.

I've dug out an older picture. This is the Sigma 20mm/1.4 Art (with the old firmware version) on the Canon 6D:

$ exiftool -Lens\* -LensType# slide_20160101_000113_6d_img_1748.jpg
Lens Type                       : Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II or Sigma Lens
Lens Info                       : 20mm f/0
Lens Model                      : Canon EF 24 f/1.4L II
Lens Serial Number              : 0000000000
Lens                            : 20.0 mm
Lens ID                         : Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM | A
Lens                            : 20.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 19.7 mm)
Lens Type                       : 250

Here the lens type is 250 and the LensID is correct.

I guess that means the lens type changed with the firmware update (or the 5Dmk3 stores a different lens type for that lens than the 6D, but I have no older pictures of that lens on the 5Dmk3 at hand right now to verify that)?

I've now added a new line for type 368 in /usr/share/perl5/Image/ExifTool/Canon.pm to work around the problem.

Phil,

I've been looking at some images from a Fuji Finepix S5Pro, and can't get lens data from them.

exiftool -Lens\* -LensType# *.raf
Invalid TAG name: Lens\*

I'll attach a full meta data dump of the file. The s5Pro is Nikon F-Mount and the lens in this case is:
AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED

Is this interesting? If yes there are more lenses on the S5 I can share data of or pass on raws.
Title: Re: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: Phil Harvey on July 25, 2018, 07:37:32 AM
It seems that some FujiFilm models don't write lens information, and the S5 pro is one of them.

Either that, or there is lens information that ExifTool isn't yet decoding, but to find this I would need a LOT of samples from a lot of different lenses.  You can do this yourself by looking at the -u output and trying to find anything that correlates with the lens.

I figured that if it's in there it might be interesting what Adobe decodes from it.
Here is RAW converted to DNG
exiftool -Lens* -LensType# *.dng

Lens Info                       : 105mm f/2.8

Something is in that file it seems.

ExifTool decodes the focal-length/aperture information:

> exiftool ../pics/FujiFilmFinePixS5Pro.raf -"*focal*"
Focal Length                    : 70.0 mm
Min Focal Length                : 28
Max Focal Length                : 70
Max Aperture At Min Focal       : 2.8

Focal Length                    : 70.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 105.0 mm)

But nothing about the lens model.

That seems to be all that's in the *.raf and it explains what Adobe gets out of it:
Min Focal Length                : 105
Max Focal Length                : 105
Max Aperture At Min Focal       : 2.8
Max Aperture At Max Focal       : 2.8

Yeah, thanks that will need to be some manual arrangement based on what is on the actual meta data.

I would have expected Composite:LensID to always give something but here I encounter
Warning: [minor] Tag 'Composite:LensID' not defined
I take it 105.0 mm f/2.8 is not accurate enough to use it for that?

Yes.  That would be more along the lines of LensInfo, and not LensID (it isn't identifying the specific lens model).  However, there currently is no Composite LensInfo tag.

Hi Fredrik,

This is likely a bug in the firmware.  Many Canon models write the wrong values for the FocalPlaneX/YResolution tags.

Hi all, thanks to Phil for this amazing tool.

I have a new Nikkor 200-500 lens and I am seeing a [6] on the end of the lens string when I query the metadata.
Does anyone know what this means or is it some extra info that hasn't been decoded yet?

  "Composite:LensID": "AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR",
  "Composite:LensSpec": "200-500mm f/5.6 G VR [6]",
  "MakerNotes:Lens": "200-500mm f/5.6",
  "MakerNotes:LensDataVersion": "0204",
  "MakerNotes:LensFStops": 5.0,
  "MakerNotes:LensIDNumber": 174,
  "MakerNotes:LensType": "G VR [6]",

Cheers

Ah I wondered, well I might be able to assist a little.
My lens doesn't have any Fluorine elements, so I don't think it would be that..
The most obvious thing I spot reading specs etc is that it has a electronic diaphragm which seems to throw an extra E into the designations..
See: http://www.nikon.com.au/en_AU/product/nikkor-lenses/f-mount/fx-format/zoom/af-s-nikkor-200-500mm-f-5-6e-ed-vr#tech_specs
and: https://kenrockwell.com/nikon/200-500mm.htm#spex
My only other guess would be the SWM autofocus (Silent Wave Motor) or IF internal focus but pretty sure they are both used in a lot of lenses, so that seems unlikely..

Not sure if there are any other lenses with that unknown code showing to compare with, but happy to help research if none of that info above helps.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback.  Out of all the Nikon samples I have here, the following lenses show with bit 6 set:

AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR
AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4E FL ED VR
AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR
AF-S Nikkor 105mm f/1.4E ED
AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR
AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR
AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR
AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR + 1.4x TC
AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR

So I think you are right about the "E" designation.  I'll add this definition to LensType.

Thanks!

I didn't check them all but yes of the ones in that list they all seemed to have the E somewhere in the name and mention of an electromagnetic aperture mechanism in the description.
Hopefully that solves that mystery  8)

Since I updated the firmware of my Sigma 150-600 Sports lens ("Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM | S") to version 2.0 (through the use of the Sigma USB dock), the lens is reported as "Unknown (368) 150-600mm".

No other changes were made: same lens, same camera (Canon 5D MkIII).

Any clue to this "problem"?

Hi Yves,

Great, thanks!  I'll add these two lenses in ExifTool 11.52.

- Phil

Edit: The 70-200mm was already known, so only the 85mm was added.

Hello, I just discover this thread.
I'm now working with a Olympus E-M10 Mark III  and 2 lenses :
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 R

do you want some informations about thoses lenses (ie exiftool "-lens*" picture.jpg ?)
if I well understood  https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Olympus.html, you already have the info.

Thanks for the offer, but I only need to see any "Unknown" entries for the lens in the metadata that ExifTool extracts.  If you find any of these, tell me the camera make and exact lens name and I'll add it to the list.

It sounds like your lenses may already have definitions in ExifTool.

Hi Phil, just happened upon this thread, although i listed this recently int he bug forums

with exiftool 11.75, the "LUMIX G VARIO 35-100mm F2.8II" was listed in the composite lens id.  with version 11.81+, this lens is showing as a lens id (and lens type) of "unknown (2 34 10)

note, in 11.75, there is no composite tag of "lens type"

I've been inspecting the makers notes for a Panasonic Lumix G9 using CCR-Exif code provided by Chris Rollins. CCR-Exif uses a .INI file to decode most tags from the makers notes. Chris provides some known tag translations and your website provides many more. Here are the ones I've discovered for lens info:

I have a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM in a Canon 70D body. I have recently upgraded the lens firmware via the Sigma USB mount from 1.x to the latest 2.03 version (changelog: https://www.sigma-global.com/en/download/lenses/firmware/popups/a_18_35_18/).

The new firmware apparently changed LensType, which causes the lens to be misdetected. I am attaching the output for two raw files, one before and one after the upgrade:

Hi,

I noticed that on my Nikon D3500, the Kit Lens AF-P DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G  is reported as "Unknown (A1 40 2D 53 2C 3C CB 86) ". I checked with a friend wo bought the same Nikon D3500 half a year  later, and his AF-P DX 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G lens is detected properly. So maybe there are two versions of this lens?

Also I used a quite old Sigma Zoom lens (Sigma ZOOM-K 70 ~ 210mm f/4 ~ 5.6) on a Nikon D70. This combination is reported by Exiftool 12.25 as "Unknown (02 3B 5C 82 30 3C 02 00)"

Thanks for all your work on ExifTool!

- Daniel

Hi Phil,

Pentax has released three new HD Limited Full-frame lenses that are updates to three existing SMC Limited lenses. It looks like Pentax basically modernized them to the more recent coatings and added curved aperture blades. I have two of them the 31mm and the 77mm, and exiftool still assigns the old smc lens type and lens name.

I don 't get an "Unknown" message, just the wrong (old) lens text, and I am not expert enough at exiftool to discover how to force the numeric ID to see if there is actually any way to distinguish between the old SMC and new HD versions.

Old lens name: smc PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited
New lens name: HD PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8 Limited (note that they dropped the "AL" designation on the HD version)

Old lens name: smc PENTAX-FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited
New lens name: HD PENTAX-FA 43mm f/1.9 Limited

Old lens name: smc PENTAX-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited
New lens name: HD PENTAX-FA 77mm F1.8 Limited

I'm on a Mac and reasonably well-versed in command-line Unix, so I have managed (in my case) to just use exiftool to overwrite the type and name with the correct new lens name string for my own purposes, but I wanted to help the community and keep exiftool up to date if possible. How can I determine the raw lens encoding information for these new HD Pentax lenses and see if there is a way to distinguish them from their SMC predecessors?

Thanks,
John

I was hoping there would be a LensModel tag or something to differentiate these lenses from the smc versions.  But I can't see any way to do this.  I would say that Pentax (Ricoh) dropped the ball on this one.

Yeah, that's what I feared.

The lenses look like they are physically identical, even to the camera-mount contacts, so it is possible the camera body cannot tell the difference.

In practical terms like lens correction, image stabilization, etc. it probably doesn't matter, as they are optically the same design (with the exception of the improved coatings and rounded aperture blades). In my own case I can change the string to reflect the correct version since I know which version I own.

Thanks for checking!

The difference should be in the electronics inside the lens.  This is where the ID is stored.  But unfortunately it seems they didn't see fit to change this for the updated lens.

Unfortunately, exact identification is difficult because of the overlapping focal-length/aperture ranges, but you should be looking at the Composite:LensID tag, not the Canon:LensType tag since the Canon 300mm is ruled out by the focal length (all these 3rd-party lenses "borrow" the LensType number of this Canon lens).

Ah, yes.  I missed the Nikon part.  The point I was making was that it was on the list of lens that had the same exact code, but as you point out, that was for Canon.

So this post is in the exact right place for Phil to see

On a Pentax K-30 a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Macro (https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-dg-macro.html) reports as this:

LensType  : Sigma Lens (3 255)
LensID     : Sigma DL Zoom 75-300mm F4-5.6 or Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 Macro
Title: Re: Post your LensType / LensID discoveries here
Post by: Phil Harvey on May 21, 2022, 11:36:04 AM
Thanks.  Unfortunately lenstype 255 is used by many different Sigma lenses.  In your example, ExifTool can't distinguish between the two Sigma Lenses listed.  And yours is identical to the existing 70-300, but a DG version, which is even more difficult to distinguish.

Post by: madison_wi_gal on May 22, 2022, 02:00:07 AM
Thanks, I was trying to get exiftool to put the lensmodel the same as lensID ("-lensmodel<lensid") since lensID is correct.

(Normally I'd do lensmodel<lenstype" but that failed here, since also Sigma 255).

So at least https://www.flickr.com/photos/always_reboot_before_calling_it/52090332138/in/dateposted/ (https://www.flickr.com/photos/always_reboot_before_calling_it/52090332138/in/dateposted/) has it right, or is good enough.  Lens info is weird though.

Voigtländer APO-Skopar 90mm F2.8 SL IIs

(Edit: I checked the Cosina site and they mostly write "SL IIs". On the German voigtlander site there are variations: both "SLII-S" and "SL IIs" is used.)

Hi,

I have the same lens as in Reply #186
Identification is "SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2" with model id "A022" according to https://www.tamron.eu/lenses/sp-150-600mm-f5-63-di-vc-usd-g2/
However, the lens ID is different.
This is what I get with ExifTool v 12.42:

Thanks.  I'm wondering about what model name to use.  Most other Tokina lenses in ExifTool have an AT-X designation.  From this review (https://kenrockwell.com/tokina/100mm-f28.htm#intro) I see "MACRO 100 F2.8 D" printed on the lens, but according to Ken Rockwell Tokina calls this a "Tokina AT-X PRO 100mm F2.8 D Macro", which is the name I'll use in ExifTool unless you tell me differently.  I'm hoping this is the same lens.

---- Pentax ----
LensType                        : Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM ? (4 7)
LensType                        : Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM ? (4 7)
LensFStops                      : 8.5
LensFocalLength                 : 45.0 mm
---- Composite ----
LensID                          : Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM ? (4 7)

Is there a convenient way to add this LensType to my user configuration (https://exiftool.org/config.html) as a workaround in the meantime?

I came across a second lens:

ExifTool is identifying these images as Pentax's previous 100mm macro.

$ exiftool -g1 -LensType -LensID IMGP8245.DNG
---- Pentax ----
Lens Type                       : smc PENTAX-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR
---- Composite ----
Lens ID                         : smc PENTAX-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR

Does this mean that Pentax uses the same lens type for this and their older older version (https://us.ricoh-imaging.com/product/smc-pentax-d-fa-macro-100mm-f2-8-wr/) 100mm macro?

Please let me know if any further info on this lens would be helpful.

Thanks.  The Irix will appear in the next release (12.67).

And yes, it does seem that Pentax is using the same lens ID for the updated 100mm macro.  I'll note this in the code, but I'm not going to change the string.

Thanks! Unfortunate that Pentax isn't making this easier, but maintaining the existing behavior seems good.

For owners of the HD 100mm AW, will there be a way to get the correct output?

This section in the example config jumped out to me

@Image::ExifTool::UserDefined::Lenses = (
'Sigma AF 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC',
    'Tokina AF193-2 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5',
);

but it seems like that (probably) wouldn't fit the bill.

Right.  That only works if I add the new lens name as an alternate for this ID.

But you could do something like this:

exiftool -api filter="s/smc PENTAX-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR/HD PENTAX-D FA MACRO 100mm F2.8 ED AW/" ...

Thanks, the filter is neat. I just added an alias.

What's the usual criteria for lenses being listed as alternatives?

The problem is the LensID value of 61182.  Canon didn't give that value to just one lens.  At the moment, there are 53 known lens with that number.  Exiftool can sometimes make some assumptions based on other values in the file to narrow it down, but not always.

Link to the source code (https://github.com/exiftool/exiftool/blob/6e175fd7662e02f6d252b31ebb67222fbc6f8c37/lib/Image/ExifTool/Canon.pm#L573) listing all possible lenses.

Edit: See this thread (https://exiftool.org/forum/index.php?topic=14346) where Phil gives a better description of the problem.

Hi Phil,

to my surprise, the "native" Z-mount Voigtländer lenses look like AI-P lenses in the EXIF.
Here is the Voigtländer MACRO APO-Lanthar 65mm F2:

Make                            : NIKON CORPORATION
Lens Type                      : AF
Lens Mount Type                : F-mount Lens
Lens ID                        : Unknown (FD 00 59 59 18 18 DF 00)
Lens Spec                      : 65mm f/2 AF
ExifTool Version Number        : 12.73

Chris

I see you've already added the new OMDS 150-600mm lens to your database at: https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Olympus.html

I see that you only have one Laowa listed there (50/2.8 macro). Here's a couple more:

Lens                            : LAOWA C&D-Dreamer MFT6.0mm F2.0
Lens ID                         : Unknown (LAOWA C&D-Dreamer MFT6.0mm F2.0)
Lens Model                      : LAOWA C&D-Dreamer MFT6.0mm F2.0

Lens ID                         : LAOWA C&D-Dreamer MFT7.5mm F2.0
Lens Model                      : LAOWA C&D-Dreamer MFT7.5mm F2.0
Lens Serial Number              : LW7520 88888
Lens Type                       : Unknown (f7 03 10)

Laowa also makes a 10mm MFT manual-focus lens with electrical contacts.

Hope this is useful!
