Title: Flickr updated their exiftool libs?
Post by: José Oliver-Didier on April 15, 2019, 11:24:52 AM
For quite some time now, I have noticed some newer tags, specifically the EXIF 2.31 weather tags, not showing up on my Flickr photos after uploading them. I could only surmise that Flickr had not updated their exiftool libraries in a while. This apparently has changed, when I recently noticed the new tags showing up on some recent uploads.

Here is an example: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jmoliver/46604784714/meta

Hi José,

Thanks for this.  At one time you could determine the ExifTool version that Flickr used through their getExif API (https://www.flickr.com/services/api/explore/?method=flickr.photos.getExif), but this not longer reports the ExifTool version.  The last time I could check, Flickr was using an ExifTool version that was years old.  Good to hear that they upgraded.

Yeah, I have written to Flickr support before about their old Exiftool version. Apparently the new owners - SmugMug are updating stuff behind the scenes. I do hope they keep it up and bring along some interesting new features. I like Flickr because it plays relatively well with photo metadata as opposed to other services which ignore and strip it out of files.

I also noticed that the new metadata tags have appeared on some other photos uploaded in the past few months, it could be that they are re-scanning the photo metadata. Otherwise, on older photos one can click on the "Replace" photo and re-upload it and it seems to trigger a re-fresh of the metadata page, which sometimes occurs some time after re-upload. The "Replace" option does not overwrite/erase the Flickr photo URL, Title, Description, tags or comments just the photo and "metadata page".
