Title: Alternative to Comment tag
Post by: Happy Hobo on September 15, 2022, 10:57:15 AM
Quote from: StarGeek on September 14, 2022, 04:36:06 PMComment is a tag that is very specific to only a few file types. Jpegs have a jpeg specific Comment tag but it isn't recommended to use it as it is very fragile and some programs will overwrite it.  For example, older Adobe programs would write "File written by Adobe Photoshop #.##" to the Comment.
I am not currently using any program that does that.  However, I would like to avoid that to be more "future-proof."  Is there a safer alternative?  I'm using it for reverse geocoding, with strings that are too long to be practical for filename.

It can depend upon your data.  XMP:Description is a good one for general data.  It can be added to jpegs, most RAW files, GIF, PNG, MP4, tiff, and others.  It can be read by most programs in jpegs and tiffs, but metadata read support for a lot of file types is lacking in many programs.

There are other tags that can be location orientated if that's what data you're using.  Things like city, state, country, all have specific tags that can be used.  There are tags for Location Shown and Location Created that can contain multiple details.

Thanks; I'll go with Description.  My image editor uses an embedded exiftool to read all tags and can open videos read-only.
