Hello
I try to use the wonderful ExifToolGUI v5.16
But file names that are with Greek characters are shown as question marks - ??????
Please see attached screenshot.
Is there any way to solve this problem, please?
Hello GeoVan,
As you may have noticed V5.1.6 is no longer maintained. I have created a new version V6.1.1 that can be downloaded from Github. https://github.com/FrankBijnen/ExifToolGui/releases/tag/V6.1.1
If you can recreate the problem with that version I will look into your issue. PLease be aware that I might need a sample file with 'Greek letters'. Also the problem could be related to your regional settings in Windows, so I will need to know those also.
Frank
Hello,
Thank you very much for your reply.
I try the V6.1.1 but unfortunately the following error popup message:
"ONLY 0 RESULTS RETURN
YOUR WORKSPACE HAS 26 COMMANDS"
Please note that if i just rename the file to english characters, there is no problem.
If i rename back to greek characters - the error above occurs.
I attach a screenshot of the error, and the file that introduce te error.
Many thanks trying to help me.
I am looking forward for helping me fix this problem.

Thanks for the sample. I am able to reproduce it. That's good!
Could you please provide me as shown in the screenshots?
a) Your system settings for the system code page
b) The output of the standard exiftool.exe
Frank
P.S.: I will create an issue in Github
Hello, Thank you very much.
Here is the info you ask:
a) system settings:
settings.png
b) output of the standard exiftool.exe :
Please, how can i use the EXIFTOOLGUI to "grab" / "get" the output of the command already used through the GUI?
For example, if i want to remove all exif metadata of a chosen file, i go to GUI ---> Modify -> Remove Metadata OK, how can i find the OUTPUT of the command, that is the command used with the output of that command?
This is very good to know because will help us to also LEARN the exiftool.exe commands better.
So, can you please explain me how can i get the command with its output using the wonderful EXIFTOOLGUI, please?

Hello GeoVan,
Thanks for the info. It confirms what I see on my system.
1) You have Greece as your system locale.
2) Your output in the CMD prompt is also not correct. I thought there was something wrong with my system.
BTW: If you want the output in the CMD prompt corrected, use the CHCP 65001 command.
I do have an executable now that works correctly on my system. I would like you to test it, but it's not ready for a new release. How can we transfer the Executable? Wetransfer? If yes, send me PM (Personal Message) with your email address. if No, Do you have an alternative?
Your question about the CMD used in ExifToolGui is valid, but I think it's better to start a new topic. SO other people have a chance to respond also. (I will respond)
Hello,
Thank you very much, i try the BETA executable, and please let me explain what happens:
1) The Greek letters of the NAME of the file is now shown correctly.
2) But in WORKSPACE, if i add a value lets say MAKE, MODEL etc in Greek characters, when i SAVE the values are converted to question marks ????
PLEASE note that this phenomenon was NOT occurred in version 5.
Version 5 executes the Greek letters OK, the only problem of version 5 is that is not showing the NAME correctly - it shows it as question marks, but it do the job.
Version 6 BETA, now shows the NAME correct, but it does not do the job unfortunately.
I kindly ask:
(a) Can you please try to fix the above error?
(b) Regarding version 5 (i know that this is no longer supported), but if you know, can i do something in order to show also the NAMES correct instead of showing as question marks, please ????
a) I will do my best. Can you provide me details? (screenshots etc) Send me a PM if you prefer.
See myview.jpg, that's how it looks on my computer. Is that what you see? And what's wrong with it?
Also I have found that it's sometimes necessary to delete the ini file. It is saved in %APPDATA%\ExifToolGUI.
b) I can not compile it, because of the external libraries. There is 1 thing I can think of, but there reports that it can have unwanted side-effects for other apps. So I dont recommend it generally.
That is to enable the 'beta' checkbox in the regional settings. See beta_utf8.jpg
Thank you.
1)
Here is the error in detail:
Lets say i have the following screenshot INITIALLY:
A1.png
Now i choose the file named "Ελληνικά - Copy.jpg", and i GO to WORKSPACE , and i try to add a name to MAKE, lets say "Ελληνικο", please see the screenshot below:
A2.png
Next step, i push enter in order to add the value as shown in next screenshot:
A3.png
Until now, everything is ok, but on next stage is the error:
The next stage is to SAVE the workspace, so when i push the SAVE button, question marks appears as shown in the below screenshot:
A4.png
We will appreciate very much fixing this error.
As i mention in my previous post version 5 has NOT this error.
2)
Regarding the ini file which is saved in %APPDATA%\ExifToolGUI. --> Note that i delete it but nothing fixed.
3)
Regarding the ini file which is saved in %APPDATA%\ExifToolGUI.
Is there a way to be created in exiftoolgui SAME directory instead of %APPDATA%\ExifToolGUI please?
Note that in version 5 ini file is created in the exiftoolgui SAME directory.
Thank you for the info. Very clear.
1) It was to be expected that that would not work. That's what I meant when I wrote in the PM "it could very well be that Greek characters in metadata are still not handled correctly."
The remark of V5 is true, unfortunately that doesn't help me a lot. I cant compile and debug it.
But don't worry I will fix it. By now I have an idea how to do it, but it will take time. Because a lot of code has to be rewritten en tested.
2) It was worth a try.
3) That behaviour was changed intentionally. Normally the directory where the program is saved is not writable by a user. See also this post: https://exiftool.org/forum/index.php?topic=15053.0;#10
Will let you know as soon as I have something to test.
Frank
Thank you very very much! We will wait to try the new fixed version. Thank you!!!
Regarding the ini file which is saved in %APPDATA%\ExifToolGUI :
I understand why it is saved there, but if for some reasons (for example to run the software without leaving any traces in the machine), the method version 5 uses - that is to write the ini file at software's directory
is preferable.
So, we will appreciate if there is a way to CHOOSE (may be by a setting) the ini file to located at software's directory and NOT at %APPDATA%\ExifToolGUI please?
Or a setting to AUTO DELETED the ini file when EXIT software, please?

I sent you another version to test, via Wetransfer. It still is not ready for release, just to proof that the method works.

Will think about it. No promises.
Hello,
YES!!!
The last BETA version you sent me is working with Greek!!!
Thank you very very much!!!
We will wait for the official release.
When official release will be available, can you also make it available at SOFTPEDIA, please?
https://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Digital-Photo-Tools/ExifTool.shtml (https://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Digital-Photo-Tools/ExifTool.shtml)
https://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/Multimedia/Graphics/Portable-ExifToolGUI.shtml (https://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/Multimedia/Graphics/Portable-ExifToolGUI.shtml)
Thanks for testing and posting back the results. Good to know that the method of creating a UTF8 file with the commands and filenames works.
Please be patient with the release, will take some time. I hope the BETA works for you until then.
Regarding SOFTPEDIA. I dont think I will do that. At first the Github was meant to be source-only. Creating releases adds extra work. Adding it to SOFTPEDIA will even add more. But nothing prevents you from putting it on SOFTPEDIA yourself!
I have thought about the INI file. I could probably prevent ExifToolGui from writing the ini file. But there are also files stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp that I dont control. (For example the cache-exiftool-xx.xx) So not leaving any trace is hardly possible.
You could store the executables in %\AppData%\ExifToolGUI and then you have the ini file next to your exe.
Thank you very much!!!
Regarding the ini file location:
Yes, no trace is not 100% because of %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp
But, Temp folder is good, i mean is ok since it is TEMPORARY.
But %APPDATA%\ExifToolGUI, is .......... if it is possible we will appreciate
if there is a way to CHOOSE (may be by a setting) the ini file to located at software's directory and NOT at %APPDATA%\ExifToolGUI please?
Or a setting to AUTO DELETED the ini file when EXIT software, please?
Once again many many thanks for your great help and support!
THANK YOU!
ALL done in the new version V6.2.0
