Title: Can ExifTool obtain Camera information from MP4 Videos?
Post by: KenO on April 02, 2016, 12:05:44 PM
With most still cameras also able to record videos hope that ExifTool is able to obtain information from mP4 videos.

Checked the features but found no mention so Googled using key words "camera information in MP4 videos" and found "Metadata For Video" http://www.videouniversity.com/articles/metadata-for-video/  It mentions "Automatically collected video metadata from software or a device like your video camera. It stores camera-created information such as aperture, shutter speed, GPS coordinates and more in the video file. The standard format is Exchangeable Information File Format (EXIF)."  Also "Today all professional video editing software has access to metadata."

Hope ExifTool can also do this!!!

If not any suggestions as to standalone software (non video editing) that can?

Thanks

Ken

Hi Ken,

Depending on the exact format of the video file, exiftool can find some of the information you are after. Just give it a try and see what shows up for your files :)

Hayo Baan,

"Depending on the exact format of the video file, exiftool can find some of the information you are after. Just give it a try and see what shows up for your files"

Are there any tutorials?  Did a quick search using "exiftool video information" but found nothing.

If not would you please suggest how I would use ExiftTool to check video file information?

Thanks

Ken

Hi Ken,

If you are in Windows, try downloading the Windows version then dragging and dropping the video file onto exiftool(-k).exe

Phil,

Thanks for the "...Windows version then dragging and dropping the video file onto exiftool(-k).exe"  tip!

Did not think it would be this simple!

Since original post have been doing some ExifTool searches and today found "Fixing photo and video file metadata with ExifTool" by ANDY POLAINE JANUARY 30, 2015
http://www.polaine.com/2015/01/fixing-photo-and-video-file-metadata-with-exiftool/

Do you have any listing for the Video Formats that ExifTool can access the MetaData?

Thanks

Ken

Hi Ken,

Have you looked at the ExifTool home page (https://exiftool.org/index.html#supported)?
