Title: Public v Private Images
Post by: Paul Barrett on February 27, 2017, 03:47:12 AM
Is there a metadata tag for 'Public' versus 'Private' or for 'Published' versus 'Not Published' please?

I am looking for  a way of categorising my image library without having to replicate my date stamped folder into two parallel trees, or without having an 'Unpublished' sub-folder below each date stamped folder in a single tree

I could create a custom tag I suppose but I wondered whether there was anything in place already? I guess I can't be the first person with this need but I haven't found any reference to it in the documents I have searched so far.

And if there are other ideas on how to do this I'd be delighted to hear them!  :)

Thanks

- Paul

If you're not already using them, my suggestion would be to make use of either the XMP-photoshop Instructions or, perhaps even more appropriate, the XMP-xmpRights UsageTerms tags. E.g. blank for unpublished, non-blank for published.

Thanks for that.

I am already using the rights usage field so it would have to be Instruction.  I am not 100% convinced it's the right one either.  The description of it says:

Instructions [IPTC Core]
This is a simple text field that can include any of a number of instructions from the provider or creator to the receiver of the photograph. Any of the following might be included: embargoes (eg: News Magazines OUT) and other restrictions not covered by the Rights Usage Terms field (or new PLUS rights related fields); information regarding the original means of capture (scanning notes, color profile, etc.) or other specific text information the user may need for accurate reproduction; additional permissions or credits required when publishing.

So it's really designed for transmitting instructions from originator to receiver of an image whereas my intention would be to flag an unpublished image as 'Not to be shown in this app.'

Am I breaking new ground?  8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Hi Paul,

Maybe something like XMP-cc:License, and set it to "Private use only" for example.  Or maybe XMP-cc:UseGuidelines.

Yes, they might work Phil.

I have also been considering XMP:Label which is a field for text labels and which can be customised to your needs

That might be way to go.  At least I am using a field which has no standard and which is intended to contain custom labels.

Windows Photo Gallery had a "Published" Yes/No flag for keeping track of photos which had been published to photo sharing sites (Flickr/Facebook/ect). To the best of my knowledge the flag information was not stored back to the file, but internally the application would keep track of the posted URL where the photo was published to. I understand how this could be helpful.

Something which I have been experimenting with for a similar purpose is using the Metadata Working Group's "Collections" which may be of use to you:

Refer to page 65 which explains the usage scenarios:  http://www.metadataworkinggroup.org/pdf/mwg_guidance.pdf (http://www.metadataworkinggroup.org/pdf/mwg_guidance.pdf)

You could create a Collection entry entry for either a particular photo sharing site, account, online album or specific to the photo url to where a photo has been Published to. As well, you could create a simple CollectionName entry with "Private Collection - Not to be published", whithout including any particular URL to flag photos you do not wish to publish.

Some time ago, I read someone suggesting using "Star Ratings" as well for quickly categorizing which photos should be published (example: Rating = 5) or not (Rating = 1).

Hope this helps.
