Title: Exiftool forum and tapatalk
Post by: stephenhartley on June 05, 2017, 11:01:51 AM
Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but just wondered if the ExifTool forum supports, or would consider supporting, access via https://www.tapatalk.com/ (https://www.tapatalk.com/)

From my perspective it would be a useful (if "nice to have"!) addition.

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sorry, but I have never even heard of tapatalk before.  So I can't answer this.

Hi Phil

From Wikipedia:

QuoteTapatalk is an application to allow access to Internet forums on mobile devices, developed by Tapatalk, Inc.

Tapatalk is primarily designed to provide improved forum access for mobile platforms over access provided by the forum software itself. The application was originally designed for Android[citation needed] but now also supports iOS and Windows Phone. Tapatalk allows the user to have a unified interface to access multiple forums at the same time.

Installation is a Simple Machines plugin, and is free of charge I believe.  Worth checking out https://www.tapatalk.com/getting_started

I find it very useful, maybe others might too?

Thanks for your time,

Steve

It's a phone app that is supposed to make it easier to access internet forums. Wiki link (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapatalk).  It doesn't look too hard to install (https://www.tapatalk.com/download_SimpleMachines.php).

I haven't used it for a couple reasons.  I tend to get annoyed at how every big site wants you to install their app and often pushes it to hard.  Last time I came across a Tapatalk forum, they did this pretty hard.  Not a small box across the top but blocked access to the site so I had to say yes or no to it first.  I just double checked a few forums that support Tapatalk on my phone and they didn't do that, so maybe it's changed or it was something set by the forum.  Second, the whole "if it's free, you're not the customer, you're the product" idea.  Checking the app, why does it need access to my contacts, my location, my phone number, etc.

Doing a search on Tapatalk Privacy brings up some issues, some of which might be attributed to poor permission settings.

My overall opinion is pretty neutral.  I probably won't use it.

Hi Steve/StarGeek,

Ah, it's a forum extension.  I see now.

I resist installing this extension because I see that other people have tried and run into problems and not been able to uninstall easily (link (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=496894.0)).

Interesting reading at that URL; I have zero experience of administering a SMF (or any other forum), the only observation I make is that most of those posts are dated 2013/4, perhaps things have changed since then, I don't know.
