Title: Current state of Creative Commons XMP tags?
Post by: carlseibert on April 03, 2018, 01:59:14 PM
Hi,

Does anybody here know the current state of Creative Commons and XMP? Is there a somehow validated or "official" CC namespace? Is anyone aware of any software actually making use of CC tags?

I have found some information on the Creative Commons site, but it all appears to be outdated, or unfulfilled speculation from the days when XMP was going to displace IIM at any moment. From what I can gather here, it seems as if Exiftool is a bit up in the air about what to support CC-wise, and to what end.

From what I can see, the CC XMP tags are largely duplicative of common XMP and IIM tags that are much more likely to be seen by people or systems at large.

It also strikes me that implementing support for Creative Commons parameters into the PLUS project would be a saner approach, but what do I know?

Reason I ask: I'm doing a blog post (which is fast becoming an opus) on how to mark up image files to communicate a Creative Commons license. Unsurprisingly, I'm advising the use of clear language in widely accessible fields in preference to approaches that have no traction in the market or a clear likelihood of gaining any. If anybody has any insights, I would love to quote you in the post!

Not sure if you are aware of this documentation (https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/XMP).
