Title: how to export Gyro metadata for Sony A series ( A7C, A7Siii, FX3..) etc.
Post by: mithr4ndr on June 18, 2021, 03:56:18 PM
Hi, I tried various options but not able to see the gyro metadata appearing, although it is available for Catalyst browse to view and stabilize on that video file.

any tips?

What command did you use?  You would probably need to add -ee to the command to see this, if it is extracted by ExifTool.  Upload a sample if ExifTool doesn't extract it with the -ee option, and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks!

i tried -ee, and it is not showing. file seems to be too large, how do people usually upload the file?

Basically I am trying to get legacy lens working with Catalyst Browse stabilization, I think i just need to override Focal Length,

As i am able to get gyro from this MP4 using a tool called rtmd2srt in github, so the gyro data is available.

i wanted to compare legacy lens file vs native lens, and see how i can override the focal length to see if that will trick Catalyst browse. so far using "exiftool -EXIF:FocalLength="21" C0062.MP4" doesnt work to override this.

If you have Dropbox or Google Drive or something similar, you can share a link from there.  If it needs to be private, you can use the forum's PM (aka DM) system to send Phil a the link.

Also, what version of exiftool are you using (exiftool -ver)?

I got the file, thanks.  There is a lot of unknown proprietary Sony timed metadata in this file.   I'll take a close look when I can to see if I can extract the gyro information from this, and post back here when I know more.

Thanks Phil, much appreciated.

I am also trying to find where sony stores their Lens focal length metadata. -a and -ee has not been able to provide it.

And I'm guessing this (https://www.reddit.com/r/A7siii/comments/o319f9/how_to_override_focal_length_exif_for_video_for/) is your reddit post.

I'm not stalking you ;) I just have an IFTTT alert for exiftool posts on reddit.

I can decode the PitchYawRoll and Accerlerometer data, but I will need more information to be able to decode the focal length.  What focal length did you use for the video you sent?  I may also need a video where the focal length changes (between known values) to be able to decode this.

Phil, i send some variable zoom videos to you in PM.

Thanks!

I got the samples and I've taken a look, and can't find anything obvious.  It is likely the information is there, but will require more work to find it.

I took a closer look at the files you sent.  There are a number of tags that change with the zooming of the lens, but I haven't been able to decode a focal length from these.

Any progress with this one? I don't have any prior experience with ExifTool so I'm going to ask just one simple question:

Would it be possible just copy an existing focal length data part from any clip metadata and embed it to another clip metadata, say from a clip which have metadata for 20mm lens and embed it (as it is) to 20mm (or any focal length for that matter) legacy lens metadata which don't have the focal length data part, just for testing purposes to see whether it works or not?

This forum post is the closest I can find to solve this issue, which Sony in all their wisdom have left us mortals to be bewildered by.

PS. I have for example clips shot with Voigtländer 12mm manual lens which can be stabilised in Catalyst Browse because it transmits the EXIF data to the body. If only it would be possible to copy the focal length metadata to another 12mm fully manual lens clip that would do the trick.

To my understanding it shouldn't be overwhelming undertaking to record clips at all available focal lengths (with reasonable steps to start with) from lenses that transmit the EXIF data (the widest such lens I know of would be Voigtländer 10mm, from 12mm everything is covered by Sony's native and multitude of 3rd party AF lenses) and compile a metadata table for those focal lengths, right?

No progress here.

Looking back at this thread quickly, I think we are talking about timed metadata.  As far as I know, nothing except the original camera is able to write proprietary timed metadata.

I guess the only hope then is that someone comes with a third party gyro stabilization plugin for NLEs as we already know that the gyro metadata is being recorded with legacy lenses, or that Sony gives us option to manually enter the focal length data to Catalyst Browser (or to be recorded from the manual SteadyShot setting already in the camera). For the latter to happen I just wouldn't be holding my breath for knowing Sony's tendency to be sometimes rather indifferent improving their proprietary features even when it would be technically very simple to do.
