Title: Crosswalks, Mappings
Post by: blue-j on April 06, 2022, 09:32:53 PM
Is it general practice to automate crosswalks among namespaces when there are mappings to do so?  Or is the user going to be miffed if you inject mapped fields into their file when in your custody?

I know that some fields are clear - IPTC SAYS when to sync PLUS fields or DC or what have you.  But others don't  Just reaching out to hear best practices.

Crosswalks?  Do you mean corresponding tags?  For example, IPTC:Caption-Abstract and XMP:Description.

The Metadata Working Group's guidelines (https://web.archive.org/web/20180919181934/http://www.metadataworkinggroup.org/pdf/mwg_guidance.pdf) are currently the best source to follow, though maybe the IPTC is going to step up to take it's place.  See this thread (https://exiftool.org/forum/index.php?topic=13443.0).

Section 3 describes the various roles for an application.

I'm not sure where it might appear in the guidelines, but the MWG tags page (https://exiftool.org/TagNames/MWG.html) does say that when using the MWG tags, exiftool will not create IPTC tags if there were no IPTC tags to begin with.  At least I assume it's part of the guidelines.

You are such a resource, Mr. Geek.  Thank you!

The MWG Guidelines are quite helpful.  It is a shame they appear to be disbanded.  For that crosswalk you mentioned, both the IPTC and CIPA worked together, not sure if anyone from Schema.org was involved.
