Hi,
I have a script which currently writes a load of metadata (EXIF, XMP and MakerNotes) into both JPG and Canon .CR2 files. However, when I run the script against a Canon .CRW file, the only thing that gets updated is the File Modification Date/Time. I've had a look through the documentation and can't see any reason why this would be - has anyone got any suggestions? Works flawlessly with the other file types!
Thanks,
Haydn

Hi Haydn,
The CRW format doesn't support EXIF, XMP or IPTC information. For these files, I suggest
you write the information to a .XMP sidecar file. Many utilities will recognize a .XMP
sidecar file for CRW images.

That's great, thanks for clarifying. No wonder I couldn't get it to work!

Cheers,

Hi Phil,
Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but am I right in thinking that if I convert my CRW files to DNG, then all the embedded metadata should transfer across, but more importantly I'll be able to add pretty much the same metadata as I have been to my CR2 files? I'm trying to stay clear of XMP files and actually embed the EXIF, XMP & IPTC metadata into the image files. You've stated that this isn't possible for CRWs but I'm wondering if you foresee any issues with the "convert to DNG" plan?
Many thanks,
Haydn

Hi Haydn,
This should work, but I doubt that Adobe DNG converter will handle
the CRW meta information properly in the conversion. However, you
could use exiftool to copy the meta information from CRW to DNG
after you do the Adobe conversion.

Oops, I should have checked this before I spoke. Adobe DNG converter
does seem preserve the CRW meta information properly. I just checked
it myself on a converted CRW image. Note that you need a more recent
version of the Adobe converter, because I am sure older versions didn't
do this.

I'm currently downloading the DNG converter, so I'll have a play and see how I get on.
