$ sign isn't required in the argument you gave
since you are simply copying the existing value. Using a
$allows you to combine tags into a single string when copying
(ie. "-Comment<$caption-abstract $createdate").
So to copy the caption to the comment, you would use
"-caption-abstract<comment". ("-comment>caption-abstract"
also works.)
So the file command is:
exiftool "-caption-abstract<comment" FILE
