It looks like you have used some other utility to edit your images,
and this utility didn't understand the makernote format so things
were messed up somewhat when the image was rewritten. This is
common, since the makernote format is proprietary. You can use
the -m option to write these files with exiftool, but
you should be aware that some makernote information may be
lost. This information is not crutial, but sometimes it is useful
to know the camera-specific settings that were used to take
a picture.

Is it possible to run Exiftool in a mode that would output filenames with errors to a txt file (including a list of what the errors are)? I could then go back to my backup catalogue and restore the original files?

Of course this will list all files though. To prevent
this, you could add this:
