Title: Marking use of Neutral Density and/or ND Grad filters in Canon maker data
Post by: dyvroeth on April 07, 2012, 09:44:50 AM
Bit new to this metadata game.  Can someone advise how I can force Canon maker data to recognise my use of an ND or ND grad filter, after the event.

I understand how to put a value into an Exiftool variable, but I don't know the codes (string or numeric) for various types of filter.  For what it's worth, I use a Canon EOS-350D and a Canon EOS-40D.

Thanks,

D

Hi,

There's no tag in Makernotes, dedicated to filter use. That is, camera can't know if (and what kind of) filter was attached.
However, for your personal notice (after the event), you can write such info into one of "universal" tags, i.e. into Exif:UserComment tag or you can pick one of Xmp metadata tags.

But that is precisely my point.  The camera cannot know, so I wish to set the metadata to tell myself.  Canon provides a field in its MakerNotes, Canon.NDFilter (or at least it does on m EOS-40D - see attachment) and it is that, that I wish to set with a valid value.

I was wondering if anyone knew what these values were ?

Thanks,

D

Hi,
As far I could findout, NDFilter tag is actually used only on p&s (Powershot) cameras -I assume, it's one of shooting "modes".
