I have a file that lacks a "date picture taken value". The log below shows my failed attempt to add the date February 16, 2012 at 14:00 hours. EXIF returned an error message. It seems that the tag 20120216 is incorrect. Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

works for me but I think you need to use double quotes on windows.
Check the result with
exiftool -alldates temp.jpg
I am adding date taken to files of pictures I scanned in from negatives.
I have used Adobe Photoshop Elements (currently I have 10)
Found tonight a program that is free online called GeoSetter
You can insert date Taken only I've been changing hour to 12:00am where mine I did in Elements has a unknown option.
Would like that option in GeoSetter.
I've been adding GPS locations to some pictures from a trip back in 1996. This program has a place to search where I could
get the information. Got to stop with that. Just loving the program.
Anyway I hope this will help. GeoSetter

BTW-ExifTool was mentioned when I used the program.
Well with trial and error I have found that in GeoSetting I can get Source to show in Properties of the file under Description: comments. In Elements properties the IPTC Source shows the Page number I put in.
Got this by Going to GeoSetter File Settings ExifTool tab. Put a Check in Use Additional Exiftool Commands after GeoSetting Commands: put -execute -UserComment<$IPTC:Source in the box.
In the File I get for example picture file 152-0007 then a second file below it named 152-0007.jpg_original. The page number appears, but it is in the 152-0007 under comments like it suppose to be. I deleted the 152-0007.jpg_original and the page number did stay. Added 152-0007 to Elements. Checked properties and the page number was listed.
Does this mean that I'm safe in Deleting all the .jpg_orginal files when I'm done? Or should I just arrange my file folder by type so the are all listed together.
I'd love a way to just enter the page number under comments in the file and it show up where I want it when I open it in GeoSetting, but guessing with having to Put a Check in Use Additional Exiftool Commands after GeoSetting Commands: put -execute -UserComment<$IPTC:Source in the box, it won't happen.
Any suggestions.
