Title: Going through XMP sidecar files to copy CSV to a DAM system
Post by: wb2trf on January 14, 2016, 03:29:46 PM
I have metadata in a csv file pertaining to many video files that I want to import to a DAM system.
For the .mp4 files, EXIFtool csv import worked fine.
I used Exiftool to import from a csv file into the .mp4 files and then my DAM imported the csv content from the .mp4 files. Great!

However, For file formats for which exiftool will not write (such as wmv) my planned method was to first use EXIFTool to export the internal tags into xmp sidecar files and then use EXIFtool to import from csv into those xmp files.  Once I have xmp sidecar files with the csv data in them, my DAM will suck the data out of the XMP sidecar files into its database.

This method isn't working for me.

First, I can't create multiple xmp sidecar files with a single command. So,  although this command creates a valid xmp sidecar file:
exiftool -tagsfromfile z:\video.wmv z:\video.xmp

This command:

exiftool -tagsfromfile z:\*.wmv z:\*.xmp

gives me

"z:\*.wmv does not exist for -tagsFromFile option"

I feel as though I'm doing something basic wrong here.

There are various ways to do this.  See examples 11, 12 and 13 here (https://exiftool.org/metafiles.html#EX11) for details.
