I know, it's an old thread, but it seems to be the closest to my question.  If I don't get an answer I'll promote this to a new topic.

How does the following (which I haven't been able to completely understand) apply?  Is this just a proposal, or is it something that is supported?

SG edit: split to separate thread

I believe this should all be supported.  Especially since IPTC uses ExifTool to generate their sample files.

I haven't looked over it completely but it appears to be more of a set of guidelines for dealing with and reconciliation of video metadata, similar to the Metadata Working Group's Guidelines for Handling Image Metadata.  I would say the core of it would be the IPTC Video Metadata Hub mappings page.  The page you linked gives the basic properties and the Hub pages show where to map such properties.

There's even a column on the hub page specifically for exiftool.
"It didn't work" isn't helpful. What was the exact command used and the output.
Read FAQ #3 and use that cmd
Please use the Code button for exiftool output

Please include your OS/Exiftool version/filetype

Thank you, I'll dive in to the second document you named.
