Hi,

What does this error mean? I get it when I try to modify any of my DNG image files using exiftool. If I use the -m switch the modification will work. The DNG files in question were just created from RAW using Adobe DNG converter 4.1 with full size previews. I am running on MacOS 10.4.10, Intel processor.

Hi Louie,

The Adobe DNG converter is known to corrupt and/or omit sections
of the makernotes when it copies them to the DNG.  This message
indicates that the makernote thumbnailimage IFD has been corrupted.

Thanks Phil,

I suppose that this is in large part due to the manufacturers "proprietary" attitude about raw file formats.   It does, however, make me glad that I am diligently saving all my original raw files.

Is this in your opinion something that is worth fixing in the DNG files? I read another thread about a similar issue with Canon raw files.

Hi Louie,

The problem doesn't occur if the manufacturers properly encapsulate
all of their data inside the makernote data block.  Nikon and Canon already
do this for most of the data (one notable exception being the preview
image), but some Olympus models store a lot of information outside the
makernote block.  I am sure that Adobe would say this isn't their problem,
and in fact Olympus appears to have changed their format for recent
cameras to avoid this problem, possibly in response to the DNG
situation.
