Missing maker notes

What does it mean when there's no maker notes? I'm looking at a whole folder of pictures (144) without any. At the top of the column it says, "ExifTool executed", and I know that never happened. Are there programs out there infamous for stripping this data?

Photoshop is the biggest culprit when it comes to discarding maker notes.

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux/PowerShell, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).
