I am using the generic xmp panel example provided Adobe.  I copied the files to c:\program files\common files\adobe\xmp\customer file info panel\3.0\panels\generic.

Using Adobe Bridge, I can update value. If value are non blank, Exiftool displays the value and the value can be changed.

If the value is blank, Exiftool does not show the value defined in the generic panel.

Do I need to create a configuration Exitfool file rather than using the Adobe generic panel?

Thank you,  Neal

ExifTool will display a blank value if it exists in the XMP, so it seems that Adobe just doesn't write an empty tag, which makes perfect sense.

But I am afraid that I don't understand your question.  If ExifTool can modify an XMP tag that exists, it should also be able to add it if it doesn't exist.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I used the Adobe Generic Panel to create a value for custom metadata tag.

If I want to use exiftool exclusively, do I create the custom metadata tag in the configuration file?

I just tried running Bridge CS4 to see what the generated XMP looks like, but at first glance I couldn't figure out how to generate a custom metadata tag.

You should be able to replicate the tag with a user-defined ExifTool tag in the config file, but without an example I can't provide any more details.
