Hi,

With iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra bearing down on us, are there any plans on supporting the new HEIC format?

Best regards,

Frank

This will probably require Phil's attention but it may be a while as he's currently on vacation.
* Did you read FAQ #3 and use the command listed there?
* Please use the Code button for exiftool code/output.

* Please include your OS, Exiftool version, and type of file you're processing (MP4, JPG, etc).

This is a QuickTime-based format, so adding read support should be fairly straightforward, but full write support may be a problem.

HEIC read support has been added to ExifTool 10.62 (just released) .

Thanks! That's awesome!

Not to let you off the hook too easy, do you have any thoughts on when you'll be able to add write support?

Thanks again!

The HEIC format is fairly complex, and it will be a while before I can accumulate enough samples and experience with this format to be able to be confident about adding the write ability.  It will only happen if the format is adopted by enough different applications to give me a wide variety of samples and software for compatibility testing.

The common solution is to convert HEIC to JPG. However, with the latest iOS upgrade, you can save photos in JPG format via Photos settings on iOS device.
