Sometimes familiarity with shell scripting can make things more difficult.  You were stuck thinking these were shell variables.  Glad you've finally seen the light.  Once you know what you are doing with ExifTool, things are often simpler than you might have thought.

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux/PowerShell, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).
