Thanks for the head-up about our posts crossing - have noted the additional comments.

I will have a play with this, but am not as fast, nor as experienced at doing this as you - so it will be a few days probably before I get anywhere useful (at a guess).

In the mean time, I'll happily send any more examples you'd find useful, now I know TAR compresses the NEFs rather nicely that's easy.

I agree with you! As near as I can tell from the shooting today and from samples previously where I know what settings were used, there doesn't seem to be any way to find the Photo Shooting Menu Bank reliably from the NEF makernotes (or any other metadata), only from the JPEG files.

Sad. Would love to be proven wrong, though, as I like the option of checking back when I need to reproduce or copy a setup for a new shoot - yet shooting NEF+JPEG seems an overkill for a single byte of metadata (Photo Shooting Menu Bank value).
