Hi Phil,

I noticed you don't yet interpret all possible CropHiSpeed values in the Nikon Maker Notes when recording video.

8 => 2.7x crop mode (on the D4) to deliver 1080p (1920x1080) video (pixel by pixel-mode; no downsampling).
9 => Actually is not a crop mode (on the D500 at least) it means the full image resolution was used to deliver 1080p or 720p (1280x720) video (downsampling).
10 => 1.3x crop mode (on the D500) uses a 1.3x crop of the image to deliver 1080p or 720p (1280x720) video (downsampling).
15 => 1.5x crop mode (on the D500) uses a 1.5x crop of the image to deliver 2160p (3840x2160) video (pixel by pixel-mode; no downsampling).

I'm quite sure these modes are actually applicable to other models (with similar sensors) as well but this has been tested with the D4 and D500.

As a side note, CropHiSpeed these days perhaps isn't the best name for the tag since it doesn't really have to do with Hi-Speed any longer (it used to in the e.g. D2h times, I guess). But I can see changing the name could break code relying on it so you can't really change it...

Hi Hayo,

Great, thanks!

These will appear in ExifTool 11.52.

Hayo,

I see that a value of 1 is already "1.3x Crop".  Do you have any idea how this differs from 10?

I guess 1 is for the still image crop mode. I'll take some more test shots to verify.

Hi Phil,

I took some more test shots (all still images, the movie settings are as I reported initially):
0 = No crop, this is either called FX or DX depending on the camera model
1 = 1.3x crop (seems to only exist on DX bodies)
2 = DX crop (1.5x)
3 = 5:4 crop
4 = 1.2x crop (you name it 3:2, but on the D4 it's called 1.2x and that is the only camera of the ones I tested with that offers it)

Tested with a D3, D4, and D500.

Great, thanks!

I'll call 10 => "1.3x Movie Crop" then.  And 15 => "1.5x Movie Crop".

I'll just make a note of the "1.2x Crop" for now.  I don't want to change this since it was called "3:2" for older models.

@Hayo:  I am soon to be among the ranks of the Nikon owners -- I just ordered a D500 for myself!  It should arrive tomorrow.  :)

So I'll be able to play with all these modes myself.
