Changes to Canon CR3 RAW format as EOS R5 camera firmware evolves?

I noticed some strange behaviour with CR3 files and the latest version of macOS (Sequoia 15.1). Thumbnail images are sometimes missing when displayed in Finder. It looks to me like CR3 files generated by different R5 firmware contain different metadata (see attached screenshot).

Is this e a plausible explanation as to why macOS handles different CR3 files differently?

I have a test sample from the R5 with firmware 1.0.0 and that doesn't show thumbnail under Sequoia 15.1.

(None of my R5 II samples show thumbnails either - there seems to be inconsistencies across Canon models even though they do seem to be supported and show the preview).

Exiftool reports that all files have ThumbnailImage included.

Thanks for the reply.

I noticed that some CR3 images created with early R5 firmware are not even recognized in Sequoia 15.1. BTW, the EOS R5 Mark II isn't listed yet by Apple as a supported RAW format camera. Probably, the CR3 format hasn't changed but it seems that the specific camera model still has to be listed.

BTW, I ended up zipping all of my CR3 images (and deleting the original) to avoid an issue with excessive CPU consumption when Sequoia attempts to generate thumbnails for (recent firmware) CR3 files. I suspect that this wouldn't be an issue for CR3 files stored in a Photos library. I reported the issue to Apple Support but it will likely take 1 or 2 maintenance updates even if they decide to address the problem.

Hope this helps.

To answer my own question, it seems that macOS Sequoia 15.1 does not properly handle the CR3 RAW format with the HDR PQ colour space. The issue has nothing to due with the firmware version of the EOS R5,
