Firmware version on Nikon D7000

I don't know if this is a bug, but I just noticed a discrepancy:

exiftool  ahc_6790.nef -G -firmwareversion

The firmware on the camera is:

A 1.03
B 1.04
L 1.009

I don't think this is a problem.  I don't know what the "a" designates.  What is the value of the Software tag?
