Could someone please explain to me what exactly the file number is showing. I have a used Canon XT and have no idea what shutter actuations count is on it. The file number on my latest photograph is 211-1179. I don't understand what this means. Thanks.

The first 3 numbers are the number of the directory where the image was saved in the camera, and the last 4 numbers are the index of the image in that directory.  This has nothing to do with the number of file actuations because there are various ways that this number can be changed by the user.

Thanks for explaining that. I had done a search on finding out the number of shutter actuations and found your great software. In the search it was explained that this would show it. Guess the person was wrong.

Yes.  The command is:

exiftool -shuttercount FILE

where FILE is the name of the latest image taken by the camera.

Alternatively if you are on Windows you can rename "exiftool(-k).exe" to "exiftool(-k -shuttercount).exe" and drag and drop the image onto the exiftool icon.
