Any idea how to fix it (I don't really know what MakerNotes are)?

As long as the files aren't RAW file types, then see FAQ #15.

MakerNotes is a proprietary group of data that a lot of camera manufacturers add the the file.  These contain a lot of information as to the camera's settings at the time the image was taken.

Many thanks StarGeek, I added -F and that has fixed it.  I removed -forcewrite=exif

Try FAQ #20.  I'd suggest working those file separately, because if the corruption is bad enough, you might lose some data.

You can list the problematic files with
exiftool -g1 -a -s -Validate -Warning /path/to/files/

I don't believe so, but Phil would have to comment to be sure.  RAW and Tiff files excluded.
