If you use the mp3-tags from CDDB, they are often wrong, especially with "various". Most times 0x0003 Title contains the artist + the title, delimited with / or -, while 0x0021 Artist contains Various, Compilation, a.s.o. How can I change it, to get the title only and replace the artist field with the artist from the title field. Leading and trailing spaces should also be removed. I have an idea how to do this with a bash-script, but it can be done with exiftool directly.

Sorry, but ExifTool doesn't yet have the ability to write MP3 information.

Do you plan it to make mp3-tags writeable?

Adding the ability to write ID3 information has been on my to-do
list for quite a while now.  It is slow in getting implemented because
of the complexity of the specification -- there are three distinct
types of ID3 information that would have to be supported, and ID3
information is found in many different types of files.

I will implement writing of ID3 information before any other type of
audio information, but I can't say how long it will be before I add this
feature.  Likely many months at least.

For now, your best bet is to find some other application to write
your audio file meta information.

Sorry.

That's good news, although I have to wait months. Exiftool is a very reliable tool, even the beta-versions and I prefer to use it compared to other tools. Could you recommend a linux-commandline-tool to write mp3-tags in the meantime? Although I ask you to set the "various-artist-problem" on your to-do-list.

Offhand I'm not familiar with an command-line ID3 editors.
A google search should turn up something though.
