So I have some files from a Leica M11-P that were taken with content credentials on. Then I have some taken without. The ones with appear to be corrupt but I can open the image in Photos on Windows 11 but the colour is very muted and flat. Zooming in however and they have retained a lot more detail that the JPEG version.

I'm trying to strip the EXIX data since I'm unable to import the bad DNG file into neither of Capture One nor Lightroom.

I'm getting this error.

Bad format (41714) for IFD1 entry 0 - L1000011.DNG

But the EXIF data is there itself.

It does appear the only issue is the Warning line 41714 and the IFD1 entry 0.

I would really appreciate any thoughts as I have hundreds of images of a terminally ill friend and I can't imagine losing them.

I'm guessing that Leica just forgot to write the IFD0 terminator, which would case the IFD1 error.  I'm saying this because my Leica M11 DNG sample doesn't contain an IFD1.

But this was just a guess and I don't know if ExifTool will be able to repair a file like this.

If you send me a sample I can give you a more informed response.  My email is philharvey66 at gmail.com

Also, it would be great if you could send an original out-of-camera JPG because I don't have a sample yet from the M11-P.

I got the samples, thanks.

The DNG file you sent is a real mess.  I can't believe that it would open in any image viewer (are you sure this same file would open in Photos?  Or maybe it was corrupted by Photos? -- it won't open in Adobe LR5 or Apple Preview).

First of all, the count for the number of IFD0 entries is wrong (it is 13, but should be 51), which is why the IFD0 terminator wasn't found.  But when I fix this, I can see that the SubIFD pointers are also all messed up.  There is no chance of fixing this file without a lot of work.

If this DNG was straight out of the camera I would go looking for a firmware update for your camera.  Clearly something is wrong here.

Hey thanks for the speedy reply. Oh this is very depressing.

Is it possible to batch fix these sorts of files. I probably have around 300-400 DNG that are like this. What steps do you recommend taking to try and fix them and I guess I can then explore trying to do simultaneously to a batch of the files.

I imagine you're right about the firmware since post an update I appear to be able to get the newer DNGs into Capture One okay.

I have Leica looking into it but they aren't coming up with any answers either at the moment.

theBear

In terms of being corrupted by Photos. No, my first step was to use a card reader and try to import directly into Capture One. I kept doing this with a number of SD cards and gradually just imported the files onto my computer so I could reuse the memory cards. Hence now I just have the DNGs in a folder on my computer.

Phil Harvey

Did you copy straight from the card, or use Capture One to do it?  I can't believe that the straight-from-camera DNG's would be this badly corrupted.  It is possibly fixable but would have to be done by hand and would be some work.

Unfortunately no applications (Lightroom, Capture One nor Adobe DNG Convertor) recognised the files from the SD Drive so I had to just transfer the folder off the card and get it onto my computer to retain the images. JPEGS are intact and just the DNG that are damaged.

Phil Harvey

OK.  This does sound like a Leica issue unfortunately.  I wonder if this is a flaw in your camera or a corrupted firmware installation, or whether everyone with this firmware version was affected.

Yeah I think you are right.

What do you recommend the best steps to getting someone to fix these images would be? If you know anyone/any companies that repair images in London/UK I'm all ears!

Would be incredible if all Leica users on this firmware were affected...I mean I have no idea how many M11-P sold but haven't seen many complaints on the web. Maybe everyone was shooting JPEG to start with!

Phil Harvey

Take my word for it: Leica owners will be shooting raw format.  But likely most aren't enabling the content credentials.  I wouldn't recommend using this feature anyway because it is easy to fake these credentials.

I can't suggest anyone who would be able to fix your images.  I'll take a closer look when I get more time if you can send me a few more so I can see if they are all corrupted the same way.  Also, could you include one that isn't corrupted (ie. content credentials off) for comparison?

Yeah I've noticed that whenever I take the battery out now content credentials turn off automatically anyway as the default.

Thank you. Very kind. I'll send a few more images over including a few that are good.

Many thanks.
