Unable to view metadata in cmd line: description/documentation displays instead

When I attempt to view the metadata for an image file in the cmd line, the result is all the documentation / description information, but no metadata.  I can see in the documentation it says "This documentation is displayed if exiftool is run without an input *FILE* when one is expected".  So, I'm assuming the program is running correctly, but I'm just not using the proper cmd line syntax.

This is what I've done so far:
1. Installed full Perl distribution.
2. Installed ActivePerl.
3. Made path associations for .pl files.
4. At the command prompt I enter the following: exiftool exiftool.pl C:\Users\dmcna\Desktop\Image1.jpg
5. I can confirm there is a file titled "Image1.jpg" on my desktop in at the entered path.

Can anyone help identify what I'm doing wrong?

That's very strange.

Since you seem to be on Windows, I would suggest reinstalling exiftool using Oliver Betz's exiftool installer. It will take care of the complicated stuff behind the scenes.
"It didn't work" isn't helpful. What was the exact command used and the output.
Read FAQ #3 and use that cmd
Please use the Code button for exiftool output

Please include your OS/Exiftool version/filetype

@StarGeek Thank you for the recommendation.  I just used his installer with the same results.

You beat me to it.  Just removed and reinstalled.  It is now working.  Thank you!
