Hello all,
I'm creating a tool as an alternative to bridge to allow our archive dept to tag files quicker by selecting multiple folders and such.  It currently tags 8 fields and works great!

but...

For some reason, after using exiftool to populate the metadata, Photoshop will not reflect all the data entered, and sometimes will reflect no metadata at all.  Running exiftool on the file shows that the data is indeed there and correct.  Does anyone know a way to prevent this?  Most people wont have exiftool on their machines to view the data the way I do. : )

Relevant details:
exiftool v6.95
Photoshop v9

Metadata fields being changed:
Credit, Source, Description, CopyrightNotice, transmissionreference, Author, Headline, Instructions.

Kindest Regards,

Daniel Costello

This is
https://exiftool.org/faq.html#Q3" target="_blank">FAQ number 3.

Photoshop ignores IPTC if XMP is present, so you should use ExifTool
to write the XMP versions of the tags.

Thanks for the response Phil. Your tip works great and keeps Photoshop showing the metadata.  It does appear however now I'm unable to overwrite metadata if a field is already populated.  I dont see an option to force an overwrite.  I was able to overwrite data before using the "-XMP:" option.

Is it possible to  use the "-XMP:" and have exiftool overwrite the field if its already populated?

Thanks again,

Regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

There must be something else wrong.  ExifTool will overwrite a tag
that already exists.  Use the -v2 option to give more details when
writing to see what exiftool is doing.  If you can't figure it out,
paste the output of -v2 here and I'll try to help out.

Thanks again Phil.

The v2 did give me debug showing where the fields are being overwritten.  It appears that if all metadata is empty and I populate one field, it may populate 1 or more other fields that should contain the same information (the description field for example).

If a file already contains metadata and I overwrite that same field, the field specifically called is changed, but the fields usually replicated to don't as they would in an empty file.

Not sure if this can be avoided. hehe

Thanks again,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

You can do (or avoid doing) anything you want with exiftool.  If you give me a
specific example I can explain what is going on, and how to do what
you want.
