NativeDigest tags in XMP

Has anyone looked into the NativeDigest tags? There is an implementation in XMPFiles part of
the Adobe XMP-SDK. It seems to be a solution for the problem of keepeng the native exif
and iptc tags in sync with their XMP equivalents. However I could not find any documentation
except some comments in the code.

but the native digest seems to just store
tad id's.  I'm not sure how it is used though.

It stores the copied tag id's and a checksum of the original values. Not-matching checksum means that the exif was modified by an application that is not aware of xmp and the xmp values should be updated.
That's how I understand the code in XMP-SDK.
