I have some TIFF images with metadata created by ExifTool windows command line. I'm then using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 to create a .pdf from these images. Problem is the metadata isn't being copied into the .pdf. Note, I don't what to create a seperate "sidecart" file with any XMP data associated to the .pdf. Does anyone have some experience on this that they are willing to share?

Why don't you use exiftool to copy the meta information
from the TIFF to the PDF?

Problem 1

Ok, when I create the name-value metadata information using Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro and
run
 exiftool -g -xmp:testtag test.pdf
it returns the value I assigned in
Acrobat. I also run

exiftool -g -pdf:testtag test.pdf

and it also works (returns the same value).
But when I run

exiftool -g -xmp-pdf:testtag test.pdf

it returns nothing. Why? I thought XMP is the http://www.exiftool.org/TagNames/XMP.html" target="_blank">tag group name and pdf is the namespace

Problem 2

When I use exiftool to create the name-value metadata on the pdf and open it in
Adobe Acrobat, I don't see the name-value information under File:Properties...-Custom tab.
For some reason Acrobat isn't seeing the metadata. When I run
exiftool -g -xmp:testtag test.pdf I see both custom tags under the same group.

Thanks for the help,

Jeff Jensen

Problem 3

When I attempt to edit/overwrite a custom tag created by Acrobat, I get an error message that the tag doesn't exist, example:

exiftool -g -pdf:CustomNameCreatedInAcrobat test5.pdf

works and returns the value 88888

exiftool -g -pdf:CustomNameCreatedInAcrobat=99999 test5.pdf
 gives the Tag doesn't exist
error message.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

According to Adobe Bridge, File Info... under the Advanced section, the named value custom
metadata tags created in Acrobat is stored under http://ns.adobe.com/pdfx/1.3/" target="_blank">http://ns.adobe.com/pdfx/1.3/

value is pdfx:CustomNameCreatedInAcrobat: 88888

Again, thanks for the help

Hi Jeff,

You can only write tags which have been defined in exiftool.
To write a custom tag, you must define it in the .ExifTool_config
file.

Ok, I created a custom tag defined in the .ExifTool_config file. It appears to me only ExifTool will be able to read/write to this custom tag, right? Adobe products (acrobat, photoshop, bridge, ...) will not be able to edit, let alone view these custom tags. So, from a big picture point of view, what good are custom tags, if other products cannot use the metadata embedded in the image?

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I thought the point was that you created a custom tag
in Acrobat and wanted to be able to edit it with exiftool.
If Acrobat can't read this tag, then I guess I don't see the
point.

I can't speak for other applications, but exiftool can read any
custom tag written by any other application.  So if an application
supports XMP properly, it should be able to read any custom tag
that you define.  XMP is designed to be extensible.
