Hi there,
After lots of experimentation I've decided to stick with the standard Canon RAW-conversion software. It's the only software that really understands the Auto white balance setting of my G6; all other software Adobe PS Raw, CaptureOne, Bibble, etc, makes mistakes with it.
Anyway; the sad thing about the Canon RAW convertor is that it exports to Tiff (16bit) or Exif-Tiff(8bit). And then something strange happens.
Canon's Imagebrowser software shows all the Exif-data for the Exif-Tiff. But Photoshop (which I use in my next workflow step) only sees very basic Exif (e.g no ISO-data).
I'd hoped that Exif-tool could copy the Exif-data from the original crw-file to the new tiff-file. But unfortunately, that's not the case. And I don't understand why not. Anybody any idea?

Best regards,

Mathijs Ransijn

But exiftool can copy anything you want from
CRW to TIFF.  Give an example command line
and explain exactly why it isn't working for you,
and I'm sure we'll be able to sort things out for
you.  - Phil

Hi Phil,

This is (one of) the command-line I used
exiftool -TagsFromFile CRW_3004.CRW CRW_3004.TIF
The crw is the original, the tif is the destination. They are in the same dir.
As said before; Imagebrowser (I'm on a Mac) sees exactly the same shooting information for both files. But Photoshop CS sees only very limited info for the Tiff. For the CRW it sees everything.
Hope you can help!

Regards,

Mathijs

Hi Mathijs,

It seems that CS does not read the makernotes in a TIFF image, so
instead you may want to copy as much information into the XMP
as possible.  Unfortunately I don't have CS so I can't test this out
myself, but try this command to see how it works for you:

Code:
exiftool -TagsFromFile CRW_3004.CRW "-all>xmp:all" CRW_3004.TIF

This won't copy as much information as your original command, but
will copy as much as possible into the XMP, which is what I am guessing
CS wants.

Or you can write both the makernotes and as much XMP as possible with
this command (note that "-all" must come before "-all>xmp:all" here,
or else the priorities of "-all" will take precedence):

Code:
exiftool -TagsFromFile CRW_3004.CRW -all "-all>xmp:all" CRW_3004.TIF

Hi Phil,
Sorry for the late response; yesterday my son was born. So I had (and still have) other things on my mind.
I tried your two options; and the last option works.
It's complicated (and frustrating) the exif, smp, makernotes, etc.
Photoshop CS sees ISO with both your options. But NoiseNinja (the PS plugin I want to use) only sees ISO with the second option.
So I'm going to use the second option.
Now the only missing link is finding out how to batch process a whole dir into another dir :-)

Thanks for your help!

Regards,

Mathijs

Hi Mathijs,

Congratulations on your new son!!

To write the output files to another directory, use "-o OUTDIR".

Hi there,
I definitely learned that I am not very good in this language. For days I've been trying to update the TIF's in the second dir, with the exif-data from the CRW's in the first dir. And it's still not working!
I've got two dir's:
1CRW: here I store the original CRW's. (i.e. CRW2041.CRW)
2TIFF: here are the converted TIFF's with exactly the same filename except the extension (i.e. CRW2041.TIF)
I thought that replacing the filenames with the dir's in the example below would do the trick.
Can you help me out again?

Hi Mathijs,

Sorry for your problems.  I have been learning how difficult this can
be for people who are not familiar with the command line.

This should do what you want (change the directory names "CRWDIR"
and "TIFFDIR" to match your actual directories):

Code:
exiftool -TagsFromFile CRWDIR/%f.CRW -all "-all>xmp:all" -ext TIF TIFFDIR

Here I have added "-ext TIF" so that only .TIF files in TIFFDIR are
processed.  Again, if you want the new files to be written to a third
directory, you can add "-o OUTDIR".
