reading EXIF date and saving it in a text file?

filename.jpg    exif:CreateDate

So I wouldn't want one text file per image but one (possibly) large file that has this info listed. Has anyone done this before and would share the "how" with me? I have looked in the documentation but didn't find an example that matched my requirement closely (and I have to admit that I'm not a shell script wizard).
