How to set EXIF CreationDate to part of the filename?

We have quite a few scanned files with a naming convention of YYYY-MM-DD-####.jpg, ie. 2008-07-29-0001.jpg, 2008-07-29-0002.jpg etc.

Is there a way with ExifTool to set the EXIF CreationDate to the respective part of the filename?

You can do this:

exiftool "-exif:createdate<filename" DIR

But the problem is that the filenames don't contain a time,
and the numbers 0001, 0002, etc will be interepreted as
times 00:01, 00:02, etc.  But other than silly times, this
will work.
