Removing thumbnails

I wouldn't suggest trying to remove these because some
software may rely on them being available.  But in theory,
you could use an image editor to create smaller images then
use exiftool to write the new images.  ie)

exiftool "-thumbnailimage<=thumb.jpg" "-previewimage<=preview.jpg" image.cr2

however, this currently only works for the previewimage,
which is an oversight on my part, and I will add the ability to
write CR2 ThumbnailImage in the next release.
