Hello,

I downloaded Exiftool 7.49 (Windows Executable), rename exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool.exe and move it in the windows directory. I'm able to list image files with field value.

Now I would like to put the orginal filename in the User Comment field. I used the following command :
exiftool "-execute -UserComment<$filename" -r "X:\my directory"

But the result is not what I hoped. No files was updated :

  294 directories scanned

    0 image files updated

 4697 image files unchanged

Did I do something wrong ?
Any idea ?

Thanks in advance

Two problems:

1) Don't use the -execute option.

2) You must quote individual arguments containing special
characters.  In your example, your quotes encompass too many arguments.

3) (just being picky) You don't need the "$" to do a simple tag copy.

Try this instead:

Code:
exiftool "-UserComment<filename" -r "X:\my directory"

Also, I suggest you try this on a test directory to make sure it is doing
what you want before running it on 4697 images. https://exiftool.org/forum/Smileys/default/smiley.gif" alt="Smiley" border="0" />

Hello,

Thank you very much for the explanation.

i discovered the execute option in GeoSetter site (in fact, I discoverd ExifTool when using Geosetter).

After trying your formula on a - small - test directory, everyhthing was OK, so I launched the operation the huge amount of images.

Thanks for this wonderful tool... and I will continue to read webpages in order to improve my knowledge of it !
