Partial Dates in XMP using ExifTool

Does ExifTool support writing partial dates in XMP (eg, CreateDate).  I have set the XMP CreateDate field to 2009:01 (Jan 2009, no month, day or time) in a third party app and ExifTool reads the field with no problems.  However I cannot use ExifTool to change the date value to simply the year, eg 2008, no month, day or time.  The XMP spec states that it is a valid date value but ExifTool complains...

Hi Dan,

You're right, exiftool is a bit overly restrictive about requiring
at least YYYY:MM:DD to be specified.  I should think about
changing this.

But you can use the -n option to relax the validation
to allow YYYY or YYYY:MM to be specified.
