I have a folder of Windows shortcuts to JPEG images: each shortcut is a file of type .JPG.lnk. There seems to be no direct way to get the exiftool application to retrieve metadata from the target jpg files. Wouldn't this be a useful option?

If the filesystem handles links at below the command line, this
is done automatically.  In Unix, this just works.  On a Mac, the
Macintosh aliases don't work, and I suspect this is the same
problem in Windows.   This is the one pain platform-independent
software.  I'll put this on my list and see if there is anything that
can be done, but I draw the line at including platform-specific
libraries in the exiftool distribution.

Well, I looked into this.  The Windows .LNK file actually contains
metadata, so I added read support for this format to exiftool.
But there were too many complications involved with
trying to follow the link as you wanted.  Sorry.
