So I am a geocacher and have come across a puzzle cache that requires me to use ExifTool to find the secret coordinates (apparently hidden in an image).  I downloadd the tool, but there are no instructions in the human language to advise how to get the information from the image into the tool.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and if it helps, I use Windows.

OK so I downloaded the Exiftool(-k).exe file and drug the image from the webpage onto the file name/listing "exiftool.exe", and all that happened was a screen box opened asking me to add the file to the archive" or crete a new one.  If I do click add, it just lists the image name in the listing below the .exe file.  So then I tried double clicking the "new" file; it says "unknown format".  WTF does this mean?  Then i attemped to down;oad the image to my computer to then drag it onto the .exe file name, but again, no go.  So maybe I'm not a computer genious, but c'mon I'm an educated woman; this shouldn't be so hard!  Sorry to be a pain.  Does it have anything to do with not having Photo Shop; is it proprietary?

Hi,

It's supposed to be easy...

Put Exiftool(-k).exe into any folder and make Desktop shortcut from it (right-click on Exiftool(-k).exe, select menu "Send To">Desktop).

Now move image file (not shortcut of image file or similar) onto Exiftool(-k) icon on your Desktop. After you do that, a (black) window will appear, containing metadata of image file.

Important is, you drag image file (e.g. from any folder in Windows Explorer) -not a shortcut or file containing a link to image file (which might be the case if you drag from browser). That is, you should download image first.

No, for using Exiftool, you don't need Photoshop (or anything else).

Greetings,

Bogdan

i guess i should have mentioned that you
must first drag exiftool(-k).exe out of the
.zip file/folder (onto your desktop or
anywhere convenient). Then you can
drag the image onto exiftool(-k).exe

Thanks for the help Bogdan.  I was on my iPod and couldn't
give detailed advice.  I should have probably just pointed
her to the
https://exiftool.org/install.html#Windows" target="_blank">Windows
installation instructions for the Stand-Alone Executable since it
explains all of this.
