While I can use ExifTool to find out what tags are in use for a file I want to use fields that can actually be displayed in Windows Explorer. Does anyone know where Explorer actually looks for these fields? This is for columns like "Account Name" or "Client ID" and even the various city and state address fields.

Even Microsoft Pro Photo Tools lets you edit street address, phone #, etc but they don't show up in explorer with any of the provided fields.

I found the policy for many of the tags in the Photo Metadata Policy document on MSDN. This shows the precedence for many of the tags such as Author,Comment,Copyright, etc.

I also found a more easily searchable version of the tag names document on CPAN so I can find something like the "DocumentID" there but it still won't show up in Windows Explorer.

Perhaps certain columns are only used for certain file types but it'd be great to know which ones can potentially be actually displayed in Vista or Windows 7.

Alternatively, are there any good replacements for Windows Explorer that do a better job of handling the metadata?

Thanks!

Thanks for pointing out that photo metadata policy link.  I wish I knew
about this earlier, but unfortunately now it may be completely out
of date because Microsoft is participating in the MWG which should
obsolete this document (although I don't know what their progress is
in implementing the MWG guidelines).

I'm sorry that I can't help with your Windows questions (not owning
a copy of Vista or Windows 7 myself).  If you find any answers please
post them here because these questions come up on a regular basis.

Well, here are the MWG Guidelines that discusses "the most relevant properties" in detail. This would be the multiple tags for description, keywords, date/time, orientation, rating, copyright, creator, and location(gps). I've seen posts here where this is mentioned so it probably isn't news.

I suspect only the tags mentioned in the policy link I posted will be useful and that the rest are specific to MS Office documents, music files, or other content. I'll probably need to stick with using those if I want the user to see them without special software.

Thanks for the mwg info.
