Copying metad from one image to another based on matching filenames?

Is there away of copying the metadata from one image to another based on matching filenames?

For example copy all meta data where <name>.bak = <name>.jpg

I have a program called GPS Utility and it allows me to match a GPS track log to my photos. However in doing so it changes the file's modification and creation dates. So what I would like to do is copy the meta data across to backups of the original files, thus preserving the file dates.

An alternative would be to copy the file creation and modification dates to the new file but again it would need to be matching names.
