Hi all,

i've stumbled upon a few (200) JPGs which seemingly have been stripped of all metadata, including jfif, ifd, exif, etc.
Since then i'm trying to repair them by copying over all metadata from working JPGs... to no avail.

ExifTool keeps on giving the message "Not a valid JPEG" and the images are not updated.

Any idea how i could rebuild Metadata for a JPEG from scratch?

Thanks and kind regards,
Sascha

The "Not a valid JPEG" message indicates that the JPEG image itself is corrupted.  Can you view the image in other software?

ExifTool can be used to rebuild the metadata of a valid JPEG image.

If you want you can send an image sample to me (philharvey66 at gmail.com) and I'll take a look.

Hi Phil and thanks for getting back so quickly ;D

I've sent you an email with the sample and answers to your questions.
Essentially the JPG is stripped of all metadata from what i can see, so the repair function wouldn't do the trick.

I got the file you sent, but it if it was a JPEG image then it is seriously corrupted.  If only the metadata was corrupted then you could rebuild it with exiftool, but the image itself is badly corrupted.  ExifTool can not be used to modify the image data.

I suspect that you won't be able to view this image using any software.

Hmmm... fair enough ;D
Thanks for looking into this anyway and should i happen to find a solution after all, i'll let you know.
