I am using windows and running the following command:
"..\exiftool-12.16\exiftool(-k).exe"  -P -overwrite_original_in_place -Copyright="All rights reserved" -creator="jgalea@jgalea.com" -owner="jgalea@jgalea.com" -author="jgalea@jgalea.com" *.jpg

When I look at the file with exiftool the tags appear to be properly written however in Windows 10 when I display details the Authors tag shows blank. Oddly with the same command on photos taken with a Nikon it works perfectly. I'm stumped on what I'm doing wrong. Attached is a sample jpg, the copyright tag appears to be fine oddly enough so the tags are written.

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).

I just double checked here and setting the Creator should display under the Windows "Authors" property.  Author does not, which isn't surprising since it is a pdf tag (XMP-pdf:Author).  The other tags in the link Phil game also still work here.

What is the output of this command
exiftool -g1 -a -s -creator file.jpg

exiftool -g1 -a -s -creator reports:
Creator                         : jgalea@jgalea.com

Is Phil suggesting I use a different tag? Sorry if all this is basic. I'm new to the tool but excited by the possibilities it offers me.

Ok, so I tried the artist tag and it is working and showing correctly in Windows. It's odd that for Nikon captures pics it worked ok but not with Canon ones. Anyway, the issue is resolved. Thank you both for your time. I appreciate the prompt responses.

The output should have been something like
---- XMP-dc ----
Creator                         : jgalea@jgalea.com

The reason I was asking was to verify that the tag was located in the correct place and something weird wasn't going on.

The link Phil gave is the list of the various Windows properties for image files and that tags that Windows reads to fill those properties.  In the case of the "Authors" property, the tags that Windows reads for jpegs and tiffs are EXIF:Artist, IPTC:By-line, XMP:Creator, and EXIF:XPAuthor.  If it's a PNG file, then Windows won't display a "Authors" property.
