I have a number of png files that have no exif metadata but have xmp sidecar files.
Is there some way to, globally within the folder, move all of the metadata from the sidecar directly into the image file.

There appears to be a school of thought that exif data cannot be correctly written to png images in a correctly standardised way ... can you comment on this?

There are lots of ways to do this.  I would suggest:

exiftool -tagsfromfile %d%f.xmp -xmp:all -ext png DIR

Where DIR is the directory name.

XMP is standardized in PNG, and since the information is already XMP, it may be best to keep it this way.

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).
