Reduce size of an image and retain Date Picture Taken

I use Fireworks to reduce the size of my landscape images from their current size to 640 x 480 but the Date Picture Taken is removed. Can  ExifTool be used for this purpose in batch mode?

Yes.

exiftool -tagsfromfile ORIGINAL_IMAGE_DIR/%f.%e -datetimeoriginal RESIZED_IMAGE_DIR

...where DIR is the name of a directory/folder containing the images.  On Mac/Linux, use single quotes (') instead of double quotes (") around arguments containing a dollar sign ($).
